Three years, one month, 28 days.

That’s how long it’s taken since construction started on my IAIS Grimes Line layout to get to this point. A point where I’m ready to plant the flag of victory and call this layout finished. Yes, I gladly subscribe to the belief that no model railroad is every truly complete. While I’m sure I can find countless other detail things to do, the major projects are all done and it’s a good feeling.

As for what’s next? Only time will tell. I have no plans to immediately abandon the Grimes Line, and a few thoughts for some expansion projects, but as of yet nothing concrete. I will say that I cannot think of a better way to spend the last three years, one month, and 28 days.

Don't know if I'll ever have that experience.   Of course, I always bite off more than I can chew.

I've enjoyed it!

It's a stunning model railroad. One of the best I've ever seen.  I hope this isn't the last we see of it, but It has been an exciting three years watching it progress.

Glad to see you will now get

Glad to see you will now get to operate and enjoy your work. The title was rather ominous though and I thought oh no he had to move or something.

The Video

The video is too short. I would love to have a scene without the train. Just hold the camera on the scene for 45-60 seconds and then have the train come into view, pass, and finally leave the scene. That way we could have time to look at the wonderful modeling that makes your railroad "come to life." Just a wonderful job of combining the foreground with the back drop. Makes everything look real. Congrats on a job well done, Jim

The Art of Videography

As always, thank you all for your kind comments.

I did receive a fair share of personal messages today asking "are you tearing down your layout?" Final was probably a poor choice of words. I have no plans (today) of tearing the Grimes Line down and am looking forward to (hopefully) years of further enjoyment on the layout.

Jim I'm going to respectfully disagree. What you're asking for is better served by still images. There are plenty of images in this blog, as well as on the Unofficial IAIS Railfans website, to peruse. Video works best with motion, with purpose, and with brevity.

Bottom line: I wouldn't sit thru a ten minute video on my layout, and don't expect others to do the same.

Champagne for all company officers!

The railroad's stock likely tripled in the market today!

James, I really liked your video...including the length

I love your layout, and the video. My personal belief is that a great video (as opposed to a good one) leaves the viewer wanting more. If I had a dollar for every "too long" video (in my opinion) that I've watched then I would be a rich man! I'm hoping to see more of your excellent layout in both still pix and video and know that you will "tinker" with it to perfect it even more.

Maybe not a 10-minute video

. . .but I could spend a whole lot longer watching several shorter videos. Oh, wait, I have already! A George Zimmer (Men's Wearhouse) moment: The Grimes Industrial Line in Great Model Railroads -- "I guarantee it."

Maybe 60 seconds

Maybe 60 seconds longer!

But a damn good video for the length it is.

Congratulation James

Well done! Your layout, scenery and backdrop are second to none.

What you have accomplished in such a short time takes most people a lifetime to achieve. That is quite a feat.

I hope your layout will remains and that you will find new and more enjoyment from it than before.

Again; Congratulations

Enjoying!

I'm enjoying both the photos and the videos. The layout is simple but excellent. All that us needed now is for Barry and team from TrainMastersTV to come over and do a full length operating session video.....!! Brian

Finished layout

James

Is it really finished, I bet in a few months that you will find something to improve or rework. But really, congratulations on finishing your layout, very few get as far as you have.

Well that's a given. But for now I'm just going to enjoy having made it to this point.

Wonderful!

You should be extremely proud of your railroad and modeling accomplishments James. Not to mention the enormous amount of information and inspiration you have provided to the MRH community and model railroad community in general. Really enjoyed following along on your journey. Now go run and enjoy your railroad!

Sound?

All I can say is wow. Love the layout and the video. I know you will find something new to do, in the mean time you have a great layut to play with. Can't wait to see your net project or more of this one.

So simple, yet so full of

So simple, yet so full of details, nice environment.

It really shows that you don't need a layout full of turnouts to have fun with our model trains.

I must share this with my portuguese friends, if you don't mind. We still think that a layout needs hundreds of turnouts.

Amen Luís. There's no way I would have made as much progress in three years with a larger layout. I hope it proves that smaller layouts can be just as rewarding.

To each their own. I wanted to do something different.
