The day has arrived! We're all set up at the National Train Show in the New Cleveland Convention Center (come see us - we're front and center at the show).

There are  lot of new products here at the show, including some which were just announced today. So, in no order other than the one in which I was able to grab them for photography, here are several of the new items. This is not an exhaustive list by any means - I still need to go by Walthers, for instance.

If anyone knows of anything you want me to take a look (and a nice, close up photo) at, hit me in a comment....

Products in the comments.

So have I missed something, where is the "not an exhaustive list?"

exhaustive list...

i bet that Jeff is still typing up the actual post. putting it all in the first part would make it repeat on every new page.

Jeff: keep up the good work!

North American Railcar Potash car test shots

North American Railcar got the first test shots of their upcoming Potash Cars in last night - they think that they look pretty good, so hopefully that means minimal alterations will be needed before they can go into production. I took photos of two of them:

(File under: I hate networking - I had a real hassle uploading the above, turned out to be multiple issues) Onward!

North American Railcar Canadian Grain Hoppers

NARC just got in a supply of Alberta cars, including this unusual one that was damaged - its two sides don't match:

They also just got in a supply of the popular Saskatchewan models:

Exactrail 53'6" GSC flatcar with 42'-0" truck centers

The same car with 43'-3" truck centers is also available -

mg_5311r.jpg

Note the cushion gear mounted on the draft gear and the brake piping goes through the center sill, just as on the prototype. The deck is lasercut wood. Because of the length of the draft gear, this model uses Kadee #156 long-shank couplers -

Tangent General American Dry-Flo Covered Hopper

Available now in several roadnames:

mg_5314r.jpg

Blame the weird angle below on me - it's a lovely model -

mg_5317r.jpg

mg_5318s.jpg

The Tangent announcement:

Tangent Scale Models is pleased to announce our next all-new car, the HO Scale General American Dry-Flo covered hopper. This is the first time this model has been produced in HO Scale.

General American Transportation Corporation produced a large fleet of 3500 cubic foot “Dry-Flo” covered hoppers beginning in 1959 as a response to customer demands for larger covered hoppers capable of handling bulk commodities. While covered hopper innovations during the 1950s proved valuable to bulk shippers, they wanted covered hoppers that could handle larger quantities of specialized commodities such as such as oats, malt, and rice. Coincidentally, plastic pellet producers were also looking for larger cube covered hoppers that could be easily loaded and unloaded under pressure. The Dry-Flo family of cars was General American’s answer to this call, with gravity-pneumatic or pneumatic-only discharge options available through three different outlet gate versions. These outlet gate variations were marketed as the Dry-Flo, Dry-Flo Chem, and Dia-Flo.

The Tangent Scale Models Dry-Flo covered hopper includes road-specific details accurate for each paint scheme. Our Dry-Flo hoppers include our finely-detailed gravity-pneumatic outlet gates and are ready for any of the following services on your layout: malt, fertilizer, feed, chemicals, plastics, carbon black, rice, or salt. Also, check out our correct “true-to-life” colors and “hyper-accurate” lettering including exact fonts and lettering placement. Finally, our scale replicas operate as well as they look, equipped with free-rolling all-metal wheels and genuine Kadee® scale couplers, meaning our models are truly ready to run. Oh, and some of our new cars also ride on our new Barber S-2-A 70-ton roller bearing trucks (available separately!), while others ride on our fine ASF 70-ton ride control plain bearing trucks – depending on which truck the prototype rode on! See our website for prototype photos!

At more than 100 parts per car, we provide you with an unusual looking yet common, high-value model that will provide you with years of enjoyment. We debut our stunning General American Dry-Flo models in eight roadnames plus undecorated versions, listed here:

- BN "Cascade Green" with the classic large BN herald and large spelled out Burlington Northern. With a paint date of 1-72, these classic cars come in four roadnumbers and continue the “family appearance” of our fine BN products.
- Conrail "H41" is a former PRR class of cars that feature the stencilized “CONRAIL” and can opener, as well as the now-classic Conrail font for reporting marks and road numbers. A sharp gray car, these replicas are available in two road numbers and will stand out on any layout.
- Illinois Central "Original Gray" in the classic original gray scheme from 1960. These cars come with the accurate black underframe coloring with distinctive open and close lettering in white on the six underbody bays. These sharp cars are available in 4 road numbers and are essential for IC and ICG modelers lasting well into the 1980s.
- Northern Pacific "Original Gray" in the classic original gray scheme from 1960. Like some General American painted cars, these cars include the correct black underframe coloring with distinctive open and close lettering in white on the six underbody bays. These cars are available in 3 road numbers and are essential to NP and BN modelers, as well as interchange roads, and lasted well into the 1980s.
- PRR "Original Gray" in the classic gray paint with large “PENNSYLVANIA” spelled in black across the side of the car, with a beautifully-rendered shadow keystone on the right side of the car. Our PRR replicas are offered in four road numbers.
- Union Pacific "Albina Silver 1979" is offered in the classic all silver paint with highly visible red lettering. This car screams UP 1980s pride. We know how to do UP right, and this car includes silver-painted trucks and is available in 4 road numbers.
- GACX “Diamond Sugar – Montreal” is the first of our two private operator schemes offered at this time, continuing our series of highly-accurate Canadian models. These gray private operator cars include a large blue and white band, and a distinctive red diamond logo. Saying these are flashy is an understatement. Check out the beautiful, prominent lettering on this car! It is available in 2 road numbers.
- GACX “D O W - Freeport TX” is the second of our two private operator schemes offered. This car includes the distinctive diamond shaped logo that stands out in white and black on this gray car. This car is quintessential 1960s in its appearance, and is a very sharp model, so don’t miss it! This scheme is available in 2 road numbers.
- Undecorated RTR Primer Gray
- Unpainted Kit

These products will begin shipping today. Features for these replicas include:
- Dimensional accuracy - designed from General American plans and verified with field measurements
- Highly correct “true to life” colors
- “Hyper-Accurate” lettering including exact fonts and lettering placement
- Genuine Kadee® scale couplers
- “Near-scale” draft gear box with beautifully-rendered side “key” detail
- Multiple road numbers for each scheme
- “See through” etched metal running boards
- Road-specific details for each scheme, including 2 different truck options, 2 different shaker brackets, 3 different brakewheels, and 3 different handbrake housings
- Lacy details - wire grab irons and coupler lift bars
- Separate air hoses
- CNC-machined 33” wheels in high quality Tangent Scale Models trucks, with semi-scale wheels available separately
- Recommended age 14 years and older

Don’t miss out on the Tangent Scale Models General American Dry-Flo covered hopper, one of the most needed freight cars from the turbulent early-1960s period of freight car development that lasted to the early 1990s! Pricing for RTR models is $44.95, with quantity discounts for direct purchases from Tangent Scale Models.

Bowser - the Alco C636 test shots - and a GMD SD40-2

I went over to Bowser and saw they had several C636 test shots. I asked if I could borrow one to take photos of. They handed me all of them...

mg_5332r.jpg

Note: the SP&S model was damaged and the shell didn't sit properly. That's why it looks a little odd. The colors look more orange on my screen than they did on the actual model as well. It appeared to be the accurate colors to my eye.

That's it for the C636's, here are some photos of the GMD SD40-2. There are many pieces of this tooling that can be replaced to create a roadname accurate model:

Cleveland Convention Special Norfolk Southern SD40-2

For the NMRA convention here in Cleveland, Norfolk Southern decorated one of their locomotives with decals of the convention logo:

Good work Jeff

You get to keep the big S on your chest.

It is amazing that out of all the stuff you shot you edit it down to much less. I am hoping that you have much more for later. as that would mean there really was a lot to see at the convention.

Hornby Rivarossi U25C in HO scale

Hornby is showing off a test shot in Atlantic Coast Line of Rivarossi's upcoming U25C locomotive. I was asked to mention that the profile of the handrails will be reduced by approximately 30% in the final version, although the stanchions are correct on this model. The handrails will be flat in cross-section, due to the difficulty of machining stainless steel in the correct cross section -

Those are some real nice

Those are some real nice models. If I do decide to do a second era with out steam engines they will be on my list of what needs to be acquired. The truck side frames on the ho model look real good.

The second era is very tempting, u boats, centuries, lots of new covered hoppers, and new types of rolling stock.

Walthers

From the Athearn booth I headed to Walthers, who I knew had announced quite a few new items recently. Terry Thompson came over to greet me and graciously explained some of their new products to me, such as their upcoming Mainline passenger cars - Mainline is Walthers' mid-level line, with Trainline as the entry level and Proto as the higher end products that would have formerly been labeled as Proto2000. The full length Mainline cars will have a reasonable amount of detail and truck mounted couplers to allow them to track around 18" radius curves. A conversion set will be available to convert these cars to body-mount couplers for those who prefer that and have wider radius curves. The cars are all based on actual prototypes - I believe Terry mentioned that the diner car was a New York Central prototype - but will sport other paint schemes as well.

Baggage/Lounge Car -

We have the Ford dealership coming, I wonder if this means we might see more modern Ford cars?

mg_5449r.jpg

mg_5450r.jpg

There is also a Beverage Distributor (bottling plant?) Nice roof details too -

mg_5444r.jpg

Diamond Coal Corporation -

mg_5446r.jpg

mg_5457r.jpg

mg_5458r.jpg

Another Walthers announcement was for the Mainline 40' AAR 1944 Boxcar - the below is a first test shot of the model and Terry stressed that it was known that some details, and rivets, were missing from it.

g_5460rc.jpg

mg_5462r.jpg

mg_5463r.jpg

I then spotted a herd/flock/whatever of Russell Snowplows. Note that they have some model specific details, such as different trucks or lights -

mg_5464r.jpg

mg_5465s.jpg

mg_5466r.jpg

mg_5467r.jpg

mg_5468r.jpg

mg_5469r.jpg

Then I came to the "Name Trains," Walthers selection of classic passenger trains from the era that the railroads ran their own passenger trains and were proud of them -

mg_5471r.jpg

mg_5476r.jpg

mg_5473r.jpg

mg_5474r.jpg

mg_5475r.jpg

The last model I took a photo of at the Walthers booth was a bit of a lark - I spent a couple hours behind 3 of these Alco narrow gauge locomotives going from Skagway, AK to White Pass and back last month -

mg_5478r.jpg

The Walthers staff seemed amused when I described how the White Pass gift shop in Skagway was using one of those G scale locomotives as part of a display of the WPYR logo -

mg_2794r.jpg

So, that's it for my seeing new products during Day 1 of the 2014 National Train Show.

Now back to uploading more of the models from the Celebration Room.

Just when I thought I did not

Just when I thought I did not have to buy anything else, they make that nice looking snow plow, and it appears they have kit bashed the New River Mine into a new model. Which looks very nice, I will likely have to buy one of those as well if it is in a kit.
