F.P. Nielson & Sons Flour Mill in Mesa, Arizona looks like it will be my next project.
Did some scouting photos today.  The silos are 135' tall from what I have read about the old flour mill or about 10" tall in "N" scale and would just be too large for the layout.  The silos are a 7x3 grouping.  I plan on using 2 Walthers ADM elevator to build this.  To keep the proper proportions and  look I will problem go to 6 silos and then make it 3 silos wide. It will have the tall feel but take up less space in width and height. The flour mill on the side will most likely be extra parts from kit and scrap box etc.

The mill has been closed from around 1974, so it predates my layout by 20 years.  But who knows it could still be up and running in 1994 just waiting for the SP.

Here is some video from the trip,  It has been chopped up just to get rid of all the boring static shots and reaming of the camera etc.  Sorry about the stock sound track. It was better than nothing as the camera has no sound and felt rather dry.

What drone did you use?

Great way to get detailed information from a prototype. Wasn't expecting such clear images. Would it be a Parrot drone? Eugene

Will Bo going with 1" outside

Will Bo going with 1" outside diameter white PVC pipe over the walthers ADM grain elevators. The silos from the walthers kit are just to fat and short and unattractive vs the tall and thin look you get with the PVC.

Silos

Think that's a smart move on your part. The only problem I had was making them the same length. I ended up making a simple jig to score a line at the right height. Bill

I will build and glue the

I will build and glue the silos 1st then use the big Miter saw to square off the top and bottom as a completed silo unit. I will use the table saw to put the small flats in the sides of the pipes before I start gluing all the pipes to form the 7x3 silo unit.

There's also the Hayden Flour mill in Tempe off Mill Avenue, it was in operation until 1998... but it is a much larger structure, and parts of it have been demolished so it may be harder to model.

Looks like your rc  model

Looks like your rc  model took care of the higher spots but how about the ground level stuff around the sides. Looks like a great tool for getting those hard to see details recorded, nice video.

Some 8 to 9 years later getting around to this project,  No more PVC pipe.     I'm printing this out on my 3D printers.  FDM for the main parts and Resin for the detail parts like window frames, vents, dust collectors, blowers etc.

For the Recorded the next photo is all part of testing before I got all the seams and lines dialed in to perfection.  You can see some errors in the prints as well as the elephant foot on the seems etc.  All that on the finale sections is almost gone other than a quick run over with some fine sand paper to smooth it out.

Well the seems show up a lot more under the camera and lighting than in real life.   Well photos just make it look like a mess.   But nothing a few coats a autobody filler primer and sanding will not fix.

Just for fun I printed some of my Precast O scale and HO scale pipes.  They look real nice coming of the FDM printer with the rough matt texture making them look more realistic vs coming off the resin printer with a very smooth surface.   Conclusion is FDM is great for Concrete and Cement with a flat rough and matt surface, Resin is great for Metals and Smooth surfaces etc.  you use what works best for what you are modeling.

I have actual plans/blueprints for the Hayden Flour mill in Tempe

Have the head house and Gallery done.  Need to get the loading area for the trucks done on the far side then get all the little detail parts made.   This includes things like windows, dump grates, doors, vents and who knows what else.  if it is in the video,  I probably will make it.  At this time the metal mill shed is not on my to do list yet.  I probably will just use a the metal clad Walther Green Valley grain elevator.  I'm holding that spot now with the Walther wood POOL elevator, and it does no look that bad.

I know you people are going to call it out and just to save your and my time,  I had to move some things around to make the model easier to build.  If I left them in the original locations it made some problems and extra issues I did and do not want to deal with them or that.   But it is sill accurate within inches in most case to the real structure other than a shift of few items to make it work.

It seems it is hard to judge size for some,  This is F.P. Nielson & Sons Flour Mill next to the Walthers ADM Grain elevator 272242290_487435832753447_2971196341432261564_n.jpg

AzBaja, for the grain bins and the concrete pipes, what nozzle and layer hight did you use on your FDM printer?

Need to finish up the roof for the rail side loading shed and a few other details like that.  Then move on to all the small details like windows, doors, vents and blowers etc.

It looks like very little has been done, but the focus has been on the rail side loading and truck unloading sheds.  I also had another production product that needed my full attention over the last 2 weeks.  I should be back on track to have this ready and in a kit form by the end of March to mid April at the latest. Unless I have another priority come up.
