I had a busy weekend but managed to apply some paint. I was able to get the vintage white applied but ran to into some issues when applying the green for the two tone as you'll see in the images to follow. so I'm a little dissapointed in my paint job and trying to figure out how to resolve the issue before moving on.

First two pics show Vintage White Acrylic applied.

Next pic first coat of Green Acrylic.

Next two pics after final coats and tape removed. You'll see my dilemma here with the paint bleed. I've only done the two end bits so far.

Any suggestions are welcome...

Paint Creep

Brush touch to fix current. Next time either:

A) Apply the tape across the surface starting at one side pressing the tape against the surface following the contour until reaching the other side.

B) Spray paint pointing the airbrush or rattle can down across the tape.

stop! creep

Here's a tip I picked up on Model Ship World. After applying the tape, seal its edge by spraying the color its trying to protect. I your case it would be the white, then spray your green. The white paint, if it creeps while sealing the edge, won't be an issue. I haven't tried this technique myself, but others have and claim it works well.

Paint Creep

I sympathize with you.  Trying to mask around battens and even installing windows and doors is a pain.  The battens have to be trimmed to get windows and doors flat on the side of the building  as I am sure you will find out when you get to that portion of the model.  The white coat looks very well.  I am thinking that a Nr. 2 pencil with a new eraser could be used to rub the edge of the tape down between battens and against the side of the battens if it will fit between the battens.  If it works it will be a slow process but the end result will be okay.  Just a suggestion.  These are two reasons I shy away from board and batten siding.  Good Luck!!

Edge of tape issues

The spray technique also works with a very light spray of CLEAR.  It still bleeds a little but it is CLEAR.  When dry to the touch go ahead and do your other color.  When the other color is dry to the touch, carefully remove the tape.  Russ

Paint Creep 2

I just happened to think that an eraser is probably too wide for HO.  Maybe starting left to right (or vice versa) going from batten to board to batten, hold the tape off the model except where you are pressing down, use the small pointed end of the bush handle to rub down on the tape hard.  Time consuming but the end will be worth if it works.  Try in on a scrape piece.  If all else fails, a solid color engine house is okay also.

Creep under painting masking tape

I have read a comment (Not yet tried it) about sealing the edge of masking tape with "dullcoat" spray, like the idea of using the paint you want to mask. The example shown was on a flatter item than your building sides.

It would be more 'fiddly" but if the other suggestions do not work, use some artist's "frisket" which resists acrylic & oil-based paints and can be peeled off afterwards. It's like "cow-gum", a rubber based material, sticks to paper and peels off without leaving a mark. I am sure it would stick to the plastic. You would have to poke it into the lower level panels under the edge of the tape using a toothpick.

Hope something helps. Paint bleed can be very frustrating.

RE Paint Creep tips

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go again.

I took a break from it today, as sometimes you have to walk away for bit and come back later when frustrated.

Paint Creep

I have had success by building a "dam" with plumbers putty and/or silly putty. Usually needs some trimming with an exacto knife  to get a perfectly straight line, but it does get into all the nooks and crannies.
