JLandT Railroad

Today I finished up adding the base colour coats by airbrush to the structures at the end of the L&T Branch.  The cement distributor has also had a little addition added.

I found the pressurised cement trailers from Herpa and decided that the cement silos, needed a smaller silo to load the trailers.  The loading silo is a combination of the frame from the Walthers - Grain Surge Bin kit & bottom tapered chute, Plumbing Pressure Pipe Socket & Domed Cap, Evergreen "H" Beams and 0.5mm Styrene Sheet.

The pressure pipe fittings (socket & cap) were a little rough, so I added the 0.5mm styrene sheet to provide a smooth surface.  It also allowed the "H" beams to line up with the frame below.

Overall it's been a great little addition and will add to scene, it was relatively easy to make and I would use it again to make loading silos or vessels.  Next step will be to attach the silo to the frame, add the access ladders, and piping from the main silos.

North American prototype

If you would like to have a bulk trailer from around the US, I'd try some of the shapeway's items from here.

Haven't bought from him, but what I've seen in pictures looks very nice.  And there are quite a few variations available from him.  I would like to do the same thing for my N Scale version when I get back to construction of it.

They are quite good...

Thanks for the link, they look quite good. I did notice though that the bare model looks quite grainy and doesn't have a smooth finish. Something to consider if I decide to get some more for other parts of the layout. Jas...

Shapeways products are

Shapeways products are getting much better with the smoothness/lack there of.  Some sanding and auto primer/filler paint and you'll never know it. Here is someone else doing a bunch of tractor trailer equipment in N Scale from Shapeways

Nice

Gidday Jas,

Q; is the domed cap an "off the shelf" item?

Cheers

Hey Steve...

Yep off the shelf at Mitre 10, (local hardware store chain in Australia) 32mm Pressure Pipe Cap & Socket. You have to sand down the moulded writing on the lip of the cap and the moulded logo/information on the top. I glued (with CA) the socket and dome together and added the 0.5mm Evergreen Styrene sheet around that. Ends up being 50mm in diameter, so fits the Walthers Grain Surge Bin tapered chute really well. I just added the small styrene strip around the bottom to hide the join. Cost was about $10 to make the silo with all the parts & styrene. They have 40, 50, 100mm fitting too, so you can make a vast array of tanks & silos. Send us a message if you want to visit and check out the progress. Jas...

But doesn't Medusa Cement

But doesn't Medusa Cement come with Rolling doors so that trucks can drive underneath the silos to receive their commodity?

More progress on the Cement Distributor & Other Buildings...

Yesterday I managed to get the remainder of the supports for the trailer loading silo completed for the cement distributor.  I also got down the sheet styrene for the concrete loading/truck standing area too.

The pipework between the main silos & the trailer loading silo are complete too,  all that is needed is final painting & weathering.

I also had time to complete the background building in this scene.  It is a pice of 1/2" Plywood covered in Evergreen styrene wall panelling and has Some roller doors & entry doors from Pikestuff.

And the overall scene as it stands at the moment.  I will be adding a either a wire fence or metal panel fence to the back of the cement plant, this will add to the scene by allowing the top of passing trains to be scene but not entire thing until it rounds the corner into the operators view.

More soon.

Thanks Rob...

I'm glad I decided to add it in this spot as it finishes off the L&T Branch nicely, really helps hide that opening from the centre peninsula. Jas...

Thanks Musgrovejb...

Yes it will get weathered, just been a little busy and have had a few weeks away from the layout. Will get a series of washes to add some grime, and then a final wash of white/grey to simulate the cement dust being washed down. Haven't quite decide on the colour of smaller silo yet either. Jas...

Now if you could just add some Pigeons hanging around...

up top you would have another detail to add to the weathering effects.  Nice model!
