We're starting discussions with consultants on doing the MRH website upgrade later this year and we're collecting a list of desired features. Here's the first one.

MARKING THREADS SO YOU CAN FOLLOW THEM

We would add a "follow this" bookmarking link to threads, and add a bookmarks listing option to your recent posts listing. That would allow you to get a recent posts-type list of all threads you've bookmarked with the "follow this" link and you could see what's new.

Does this sound like it would do the trick, and remove the need to put borderline "spam" posts on threads you want to follow?

Yes, great idea! I would also be for a "like" button as well...I guess its a habit of the Facebook age, but I find myself wanting to "like" posts I agree with on here at times.

3D PDF

Here is another one that will probably be a lot harder...I would love to be able to imbed a 3D PDF file into a blog post. I have drawn up a few benchwork layout diagrams in 3D. I would like to share them and be able to have people be able to click and spin them around. I had trouble understanding how the mushroom style layout really worked, so I drew one up in 3D...it made much more sense to me then. This could be helpful for a lot of MRH readers.

Social media "share" button

It would be nice to be able to "share" items of interest as well as a "like" button.  We can share on Facebook now but the link takes you to the magazine in whole. (not a "bad" thing!) but the ability to share a single item  item of interest could possibly spark some more interest from those who are borderline readers/modelers.

Follow or Subscribe...

A few other sites I frequent have a button labeled "Subscribe" which allows you to easily keep up with threads in which you are interested.  Adding a "Subscribe" or "Follow" button would be a good idea.  I have also seen a "Create a Poll" button which allows users to easily create a poll, and displays a bar graph of the results. It seems to get a lot of use.  Posting photos on MRH is a bit cumbersome, there is room for improvement there. It would also be nice to more easily distinguish between a person's blog and the general forum. I respond differently depending on which it is, but sometimes miss that it is a blog until too late.  The whole blog area is difficult to navigate for me.

Features

I would like to see these features added or updated:

Follow:

  • Follow This Post
  • Follow this post and notify me of updates by email
  • Posts I am following list (with ability to un-follow and toggle email option)
  • Posts should show X number of followers

Like:

  • Like Post on MRH
  • Like Post on Facebook
  • Like Comment on MRH
  • Like Comment on Facebook
  • Posts and comments should show X number of MRH & Facebook Likes
  • Posts X user likes (show me the posts that so'n'so has liked) similar to the current "track user".

Hide:

  • Hide this post, I never want to see it again
  • Ability to view & manage your list of hidden posts

Mark as Spam:

  • Don't let posts disappear until at least 2 people have marked as spam (avoids the fat thumbs oops factor)

Share post on social media:

  • Share on Twitter, Facebook, PinIt, Pinterest etc.

Mobile Devices

  • Full support for viewing and posting from Mobile Devices on iOS and Android
  • Should be the same as with a PC, post pictures, embed media etc.

Integration with TMTV posts

  • There is a TMTV section on the MRH forum and separate comments on TMTV. It would be good if the comments on the TMTV pages appears in the MRH TMTV section, the same way comments on the MRH Mag article pages do.

(Added later...)
Recent Posts

  • Keep the Recent Posts Feature
  • Add some sorting options - recent post by date/author/type/popular/unread to group them
  • add the ability to mark as read without opening it (so a post can be pushed down the list without hiding it.)

Cheers!

Bill nailed it! I would really like full posting functionality from my phone, since I use my phone as a camera most of the time anyway. This would save me a lot of steps.

Posting to Social Media

Just thinking out loud here, but if you could share posts to any social media and comments are made on that site, how do people who do not frequent these sites (I only do Facebook) read the posts? I belong to several Camping forums and this exact procedure lead to fragmenting of at least two of the groups.

I can envision a really good discussion becoming split among here, Facebook, and wherever with some people not being able to participate in the whole of the discussion.

Just some thoughts.

Facebook etc.

I see what you mean, however, I would look at it as multiple conversations spinning off of one. The key here is that all of them link back to the MRH post and reach a wider group of people than just fellow modelers. This accomplishes several things...

  1. It shares your hobby with your non-railroad friends.
  2. It increases awareness of the hobby in general through your no railroad friends comments and additional likes outside of MRH and may attract new blood to the hobby.
  3. It increases awareness of MRH among your non-MRH modeling friends.

When you are in a room of people and engrossed in a conversation, somebody will overhear part of it and begin talking about the same thing with another individual. You don't get to follow their conversation, but the topic is passed on and others become interested. It's ok if it becomes fragmented. Those who are truly interested will follow it back to the source if they can see the trail.

Mobile submissions

I think Bill covered it in his list, but I'd like to second the idea of full mobile support. Most notably, the ability to upload pics and vid from mobile devices. That's where the cameras are! This may be worth mentioning, I hope the new site and updated features will have the same look and feel as the current site. Nothing is more frustrating than having to hunt all over to find the location of the "old favorite features" when a site updates. Many times it seems like change for the same of change.

Blog vs. Topic

I agree with Randy on this one.  I think some of the folks who "hi-jack" threads don't realize that they're reading someone's personal blog rather than an open topic.  There isn't an obvious visual difference.

Blog vs. Topic

But at the same time it would be best to keep these interspersed with the forum content.

Blog posts in the topic list could be a different color, or there could be a second list - recent blog posts.

I however do not think the two should be separated. Much of the best conversation happens in blog posts.

I'd like to be able to

I'd like to be able to favorite a post, not a thread but an individual post. Such would be great in circumstances like Tom Johnson's INRAIL thread where he gives an explanation of how he achieved something. Granted, we can favorite the thread, but with over 350 posts the information can take some digging to find,

Terminology...

Post - The Post is a Topic. A Post contains Comments and a Post with all of it's Comments is called a Thread.

These are all posts:

This is a comment:

If I understand correctly, you'd like to be able to bookmark or favorite a Comment

This works to some degree already - you click on the comment's title and it gives you a URL in the location bar of your browser that contains a link to the comment - but that feature is not actually working correctly on this site due to an error in pagination.

I agree, It would be nice is this would work properly.

It would also be nice to be able to maintain a list of "favorite" posts and comments in our MRH user accounts rather than clogging up the browser's bookmarks.

Definitely

a "like" button in some form to avoid all the "atta boy" posts clogging up threads.  People can still express their appreciation for a post or comment and the OP gets to see the positive feedback, but the thread doesn't get filled up with posts that don't add value.

Thanks for cleaning up my thoughts a bit. I understand that you can bookmark it manually, but we're talking about adding features. It would be nice to not add to my mountain of bookmarks in Chrome.

More features?

I don't really need any more features, everything works fine for me as is . I'd eliminate the ability for random readers to mark a post as spam because I think it could hide some valuable but unpopular comments.Maybe require 10 people to mark it as spam before it is removed would be a useful compromise?  The only major change I'd like to see is more people posting instead of just observing. Folks with experience should share more and folks without should be asking more questions so they can get into the game.....DaveB

Page navigation

First of all, I really like the "Follow this" idea Joe.  Thanks for looking into it.

As long as we're building a wish list, having the page navigation buttons at both the top and bottom of each page of a thread would be very helpful.
