Started weathering the Rails with the Rusty Pipe color acrylic paint. It's a bit tedious but looks good so far. May do one more coat.

In the pics I placed a piece of white paper in front to get a better idea of the color, as it tended to blend in with the base color in view.

This is the Folk Art brand

This is the Folk Art brand paints right?  If so, what is the paint ID #?  and did you get it in the small 2oz bottles or were you able to get a larger size somewhere?

Btw, this looks amazing!

I noticed that Walmart in my area carries both the Apple Barrel and Folk Art paint lines in the craft section.  I find some of the Apple Barrel paints worked well for scratch building if you started with something close to the right color and adjusted it with white/black/etc as needed.  Also can't beat the price on these (under $1 per bottle usually).

Did you thin the paint a bit with water before applying it?

Looks great!

Not only does the color look great, but the variance in the shades makes it look realistic!

Paints

Peter.

Those tracks that you painted look pretty good. Is it a siding that you painted or a main line?  If its a mainline Iwould get some black paint and delute it with some IPA and wash it over the rails to tone down the rust color. Take a picture of a mainline that you are modeling and try to get the tracks that color, Mainline tracks are not really rusty, They are more grimey and greasy than rusty. Now sidings that are lesser used will be rusty.

Virginian and Lake Erie

The paints that you get at Walmart in the crafting section you can use them for Railroading. They are the same that you can find at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Joann Fabrics or any other craft store around you. I found out at Hobby Lobby and Michaels  thats there are a lot more colors that they offer.  So dont be turned off from the crafting paints they work even better than the Hobby paints.      Kevin

Walmart

Yes Walmart carries some of the acrylics. I've bought some there too. The art and craft stores carry more of a selection of colors. I thin the paint with windshield washer fluid. You don't need much for your paints so when ever I buy some for the car I refill my supply I use for painting.

Biggest Thing It's Weathered

Looks good, would agree a wet rag wrapped around finger and passed over rail heads while paint wet would make life easier.

nice look

Went to Wally world and Michaels and they don't have that color in Folk Art.   Will go by Hobby Lobby this weekend to see if they have it there.

Does thinning it with the windshield washing fluid give the two tone effect in the top picture?   any other method you are using?   What percent roughly are you thinning.  then just brushing it on or using any other technique?

I am curious what it looks like over rail that has been painted full strength with a rail brown.  Trying to get that prototypical in between look between oily brown and pure rust.

thanks,

Re nice look

I thinned it down be more of a wash and then layer it. As the paint out of the bottle is kind of thick, I eyeball the mix about 60% paint to 40% washer fluid. The washer fluid tip I came across in the forums as the same ingredients as the thinner that is sold for acrylic paints. Just allot cheaper as you can buy a gallon of windshield washer fluid for around a buck at Wally World.

Half way there

Worked on it a bit more today, about half way done with rails. The switches take the longest time.

Folk Art Paints

I stopped at Hobby Lobby today to look at the Folk Art Paints. Huge selection very deep in inventory. Hobby Lobby  list price is $1.37 for 2 ounce and they are on sale at 30% off until 5/3, no limit. I use several colors for weathering so now I have to try this one. Thanks for the info.

yup...me tooo

got to hobby lobby and grabbed up their last two bottles.   also, hadn't been there in a while and saw they had Tamiya white body putty.   IIRC that is better(finer particles) than squadron green.   I bought a tube of bondo and was using that up to a couple years ago, but when I cleaned everything out last year, it had hardened.   time to start anew on everything, it seems.

thanks for the tips and will be trying it soon.

Hobby Lobby Coupon

When going to HL, don't forget to take their 40% off coupon.  You can one for 40% most any one item per day.  You have to print a new coupon for each trip, but that's ok.

Go to their website to download or go to http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/coupon.cfm. I think the other stores (Michaels) have their own too.

My walmart only carries a limited supply and my Hobby Lobby is 30 miles away, so don't get there very often.

Re hobby lobby run

Made my run to Hobby Lobby today as we had to do Sams run. So that shoots this weeks pay check, lol. Took advantage of e 30% off on acrylics and thanks for the tip that they were on sale. They were regular here at 1.09 here and were .76 cents each after discount. Picked up a couple of other colors to experiment with (another brand) and those were only .54 cents after discount . Another tip on the discount coupon is don't try to use the one from their email flyer as it has no expiration date and they won't accept it. Go to the coupon download link and use it, or you can also download their app to your phone and show them the coupon from it. I had a little debate with the floor manager on that issue. But in the end they took care it for me and downloaded a coupon for me.

I agree

I agree. a little black would give it a little more zip. I like to use graphite powder (used for lubricating locks) dusted here and there with an acid brush (hardware store plumbing department, 25 cents), and also applied to the outer side of the top of the rail with a fingertip. You would be surprised what a difference it makes.
