Hello I have a Rivarossi Alleghany I am putting back together It is missing the screw to hold the boiler on and also the screw that holds the cab on. I was hoping to get screws from my local hobby shop. If I was to get a tap set could I tap new non metric holes for the screws say something like 2/56. I never realy tried taping for new screws but it looks easy. I would need to also do the tender shell. Any ideas or help apreciated.

Tapping for Smal Screws

Joe,

Tapping for very small screws can be a challenge. Small taps even as large as 2/56 are easy to break, If it is a plastic shell holding a metal insert then breaking the insert is a problem. Tapping requires knowledge and the proper tools. It is not that hard, but not being prepared can lead to more problems.

I would consider trying to find the proper replacement screws. You may use a diagram or a picture to describe the part and where it is located. Someone may have one or know where you can get one on this forum. You could also do some research and find a suitable replacement part.

Allegheny Screws

The cab screw is a course thread type (think sheet metal type) and is close to the size of a 2-56. The boiler screw goes into the weight and I believe it is either a 2-56 or the closest metric equivalent. Most of us have a huge collection of screws from years in the hobby so I never become overly concerned if I loose the model's original screw. And we all lose screws.

Screws

Most MRR stuff uses machine thread type screws. Good chance the loco uses Metric screws. Built on the other side of the Pond.

I have 00-90, 0-80 and 2-56 taps, Tapered and bottoming types plus appropriate drills., pin vises. Most of the stuff from Micro Mark.

I have used kerosene for tapping in metal on model railroad stuff for years. Plastic is usually not a problem. Take your time. Don't try to bend the tool when tapping.

Anyone doing MRR work needs these items. At least two pin vises.

If you contact the USA rep,

If you contact the USA rep, whom I believe runs a small operation in Washington State, you are likely to get the parts you need.  I lost the lever running the mechanical lubricator on my Rivarossi H-8, and contacted him for spares.  I had them within a couple of weeks.

Thank you all for your suggestions   Crandell I did call the US rep as you suggested and got a hold of a very nice man who told me he would send me the screws. He was very knowledgeable and knew just what I needed.

Hows the layout coming, If I remember you used to have quite a long batch of posts on another web site that I followed for quite a while. It would be interesting if you kept things up to date on here, I am sure lots of folks would be interested besides me.

Hi, Rob.  At a standstill at the moment with other commitments and holds on my time....and energy.  I am beginning just these past couple of weeks to renew interest in the layout and I hope to be making headway soon.  Thanks for asking!  Sometimes it is the onlookers who remind me that I have miles to go before I sleep.
