JLandT Railroad

You go out and you make your own...

These are not prototypical, but I really want to build up my Reading Lines rolling stock.  Seeing that I have taken the liberty of letting the RDG live on through and into the Conrail era these will be a newish acquisition.

They are based on a Atlas Trainman ACF 50'6" Box Car.  These are undecorated and I will be painting them, applying decals, weathering & detailing.  There will be four of these boxcars done in different RDG schemes.

Hubba Hubba

Jason,

the Reading (and particularly its Bumble Bee scheme) are my closet Northeastern US railroad love.  The fact that you still have them running is one reason I keep tuning in here (your modeling skill is another).  Now that you've opened the can, I may have to copy you in N scale . . . .

Reading Lines in the modern era

Jason,

I live in the Reading area, and am also working on a current day version of the Reading Railroad in N scale.

I currently have 2 NS Heritage locos in Reading colors.  The rest of my locos are CSX and will eventually be painted in Reading colors.

One of the advantages of...

Having a partly freelanced railroad allows for some flexibility, I actually came across a "O" scale boxcar the other day in "Beeline" scheme. Not sure if it actually existed in real life but it looked good. Feel free to copy away Philip, hopefully the will work, and glad I can give you your RDG fix... Jas.

Virginian and Lake Erie

I am doing something similar

I am doing something similar, the difference being I model the Virginian and it's westward expansion that never took place. So I will be adding locomotives both steam and diesel that it never had and some hoppers that it never had. I will likely add a few other types of rolling stock as well. At least it's major merger partner the Wheeling and Lake Erie had them.

I guess if you do it well and the items were used by other roads in the same area it will look very plausible. The green paint looks good so things are looking good so far.

And away we go...

Into the world of decals, microset, microsol, and hopefully a little miracle for the first time, and a whole lot of patients and coffee...

What kind of acrylic mix did you finally settle on for your Reading boxcar green?

Mr Bill, it's...

The PollyScale - Reading Green on the boxcar in the picture. I've been to the my LHS and got a variety of different acrylic variations of green for the darker colour to try. I'll do a comparison shortly when I finish off this boxcar. Jas...

Results of the first attempt...

At decals on my new/old RDG Rolling Stock...

IMG_0183.jpg

The colour may seem a little darker (which it is) because I added another couple of coats of the PS RDG Green, and then added a final Gloss Coat.

And up close, shows some of the spots that didnt bed down over the details to well, even after applying MircoSol...

Still a lot more to add before finished, so more soon...

Nice looking car. A nice

Nice looking car. A nice thing about one of those non-prototypical cars is if it is done well it looks like it should be in service. Your era is newer than I research but I am wondering about numbers on the car ends and data on the other end of the car? In the fifties and early sixties it is there, was that something that was no longer used like re-weigh dates etc. I am sure there won't be the frequent inspection dates that were prevalent in my era as in your era everything has roller bearings.

Not trying to nit pick but just curios. Also if you don't point out the issue of decals not settling down over details I think it may remain unnoticed as you have done such a fine job on the car. If they could have been recently been built in your era it might be nice to have one or two new ones on your layout in an unweathered state to depict brand new cars!

Well done!

That looks good.  Now you need the lube stencil and COTS plates . . . . and graffiti

New Accurail RDG 50' XL Boxcars...

These came out not long after I started this project to create my own RDG Boxcars.  They are straight out of the box nothing done yet, the paint & signage seem to be pre-faded at the factory (gives the boxcar a look from about 10 years on the tracks) and they have nice detail to work with.

I'll slightly weather these, add some metal wheel sets and re-number 5 of the 6 I got.

Not much to do to them...

Dave they will only need weathering, there are some guys that have already painted them though on another forum. The fence is the BLMA HO scale fence. Jas.
