With house construction and finishing basically done, it's time to get organized... Step one for organizing is to build storage shelves, which are conveniently, part of the benchwork for the railroad!

Built the benchwork shelving for under the St. Jean to South of Morris section of the layout with my youngest son tonight.

Awesome

I love that you have twice as much space to store things that won't be on the layout as you have on the layout itself. That's certainly how it's working out for me. pqe

"twice asmuch space to store things that won't be on the layout"

Haha, I built about 40 feet of enclosed storage below the benchwork for my planned S scale workshop layout then decided to build a small N scale shelf layout in the house instead so now I got lots of storage plus a long bare table top  to set even more stuff on :> ) ..DaveBranum

Shelves

Great job, but yellow walls? Are you adding a backdrop?

Very nice!

Bill,

You're off to a great start and using the underneath of the layout for storage is a great idea.  I'm looking forward to following your progress.

Yellow

Don't worry, the yellow will disappear between the layout and the valance

Room acoustics

Bill,

Great job; and I agree:  "The right power tool for the right job!!!"

The complex shape of the room should make for some interesting acoustics.  You have hard surfaces for ceiling/walls and for floors, but with all the angles, it's hard to predict results.  I would hope that loco sounds stay local with the location of the train, with everything else attenuated/no echos.

The first step has been made; you're on your way.

Sound

Interesting point you make on sound Don. I prefer my locomotives to be as quiet as possible so I don't think it will be much of an issue. Also I am planning cloth valances and skirting so that will have a significant effect on sound.

Also I'm not using 2" Foam under the tracks! Just beside it

Cheers!

Organization

I dunno', You organized folks that start putting up storage shelves before you even get to the trains... You do know that you are going to miss out on hours of fun mindlessly looking for tools that you put "somewhere"  ; )

In all seriousness, good work. I wish I had the forethought and patience to do things like that.

It's not what you think....

This storage area is for the household stuff. If I don't store it away, I can't finish my office space, setup the laser, make the wife happy, etc etc, and I won't have any free walls to start building railroad...

...so this way, I kill a flock of birds with one stone, and I can claim I've started on the railroad

Nice Idea

The shelves will be handy for sure, Bill. I want to organize some storage under my layout like that too. The only drawback I can see might be when it comes to trying to do wiring in that limited space without really being able to get under the layout. Congrats on the start! Let the fun begin!

A corner of my basement had a play room and I made shelves the held all the toys and just happen to have a ply wood top that was perfect to hold a layout extension.

Boy, do I understand that!  I guess I could say I've been working on my layout too.  First, I had to finish the other side of the basement with a game room and a home theater for the family.  Then, I had to cut a hole in the foundation wall to build a storage area to hold the stuff that I had to clear from the other side of the basement. There is still stuff to be removed from the train area, so I am now building shelves for the garage to move it there.  I think that over this winter I will have all the shelving built and most everything cleared out.  Then I have to build a craft/sewing area for the wife unit so I can take over that area of the basement too.

It may look like I'm working on the house, but really I'm building a layout!  Don't tell anybody.
