Just a little more proof that us here in the Pacific Northwest are more than a little train crazy! Check out the latest Washington State Lottery commercial. I like this guy's thinking!

Fantastic!

This is so awesome! It has got to be the next video for MRH's "Derailments" column!

Huh?

Cute - but he's on the wrong side of the cab and just before backing up, he puts the air brakes into Emergency!

Oh, well ..... still pretty funny.

I wondered if anybody else noticed that.  I also noticed that there was no air in the brake system when that particular clip was filmed...

He is on the right side, though.  The long hood is the front (a lot of Southern locomotives were set up that way, and still are today), and in one shot you can see the control stand inside.

Technically accurate versus conveying a message

Had they made the commercial 100% accurate the details would have been lost on 99.999% of the viewers and may have actually worked against them. Moving the handle in the direction he did suggests to the average public viewer he was putting the train in reverse. While technically inaccurate it better conveys the sequence of events to Joe public. I would be willing to bet a real railroader on the set told them it is wrong but the director/producer decided to do it anyway because he knew his audience.

At least they didn't portray the model railroader with the usual negative connotations so that is a good thing.
