UPDATE: For those of you interested in hearing the story behind the K&LE and seeing some great video footage of the layout in operation, it's featured in the September edition of TrainMasters TV. Here's a link to the preview:  http://trainmasters.tv/video-player/tmtv-2014-09-act-i-preview. And here's a link to some photos of John's incredible steel mill complex:  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/newport-steel-on-the-kle-12193782.

Taking a cue from Tom Johnson and his introduction of Quintin Shini's M&NI railroad, I thought would introduce John Miller's proto free-lanced Kanawha & Lake Erie. The layout represents a section of the line from just west of Cincinnati, Ohio, includes a large yard at Cincinnati, and runs to Hillsboro, Ohio and staging beyond.. I'll let John jump in comment about the specifics of his railroad.

The pictures don't do justice to the size and scope of the layout, and the detail throughout is top notch. Here's hoping we can convince John to post some more pictures.

Steel Mill

The layout looks great and wait, Newport Steel, Division of Davies Steel -- Yes, please post more photo's of your steel mill. Did you know Dean Freytag? I always enjoyed reading articles about Dean's South Ridge Lines and his Davies Steel. Dean had some of the most realistic steel mill structures I've ever seen.

Well Done!

I especially like the scene with the highway overpass spanning the yard... Seems like every big city has a scene similar to that in real life.  It looks like a really fun layout to operate!

Wow Tom!

Hey Tom, thanks for sharing John Miller's layout with us.  I really like it!  It looks like he's got some rather large industry/structures on his layout.  Well done!!  John should be very proud of what he has there.

thanks

Thanks for the responses and questions.  Thanks to Tom Patterson for doing the blog setup and photos to get my stuff out there.  Tom is dragging me "kicking and screaming" into the world of "blogasphere".  My posts and photos may be determined for a while by how much time he wants to spend nursing things along.  To answer the Q's:  No more quality photos of the steel mill are available to post, but we will be doing some soon.  I met Dean Freitag on numerous occasions and he knew me to speak to but I doubt if he knew my name.  My reason for the naming was a tribute to him for getting the walthers structures done and as a practical matter, I had accumulated quite a few Davies steel cars  from NMRA and other special runs.  This gave me Newport  Steel which is actually at the location I'm modeling and the Davies name to utilize the cars.  The K&LE is a freelance approach to modeling the greater Cincinnati railroad scene.  It is 1976 era and is industry rich with lots of switch jobs.  John

Thanks

THANKS to Tom for doing the setup and to John Miller for the K&LE layout.  I saw it once on a layout tour for the Louisville, Ky NMRA div 8 and was throughly blown away by it. I honestly didn't want to leave but  had too because I was carpooling. Would love to see it again.  Thanks again, Andrew.

Newport Steel Job

The first time I attended an operating session at John's I volunteered for the steel mill job.  I spent about 4-1/2 hours working the various areas of the mill and running transfer jobs over the Ohio River to Undercliff yard, and I never left that end of the basement.  It was AWESOME!  John's layout is incredible if you like big time urban railroading.

Great!

Thanks for sharing the K&LE with us. Looks like a great layout for operations and switching in particular. I could envision my CC&CI interchanging some traffic from the CW&E and the K&LE in a 1:1 world.

I'll be watching for more posts about the CWE and the K&LE!

Can't wait for the episode

Mr. Miller has a fantastic-looking layout, and if you think it looks good, that's not even half the story. His railroad operates even better than it looks. His operating scheme and industrial switching work are simply amazing, and the layout is a joy to operate. I hope the Trainmasters episode captures a bit of that.

Layout article coming in December issue

The K&LE layout article is coming in the December issue of MRH, or if you'd like to see it on TrainMasters, that video was posted in the September show.
