Wild stab in the dark...

Dear Peter,

Nothing solid to back this up, but _suspect_ that

"New" means that there are new posts to the thread,

"Updated" means someone has gone back to one of their previous posts in the thread, and edited or "updated" the thread...

In my experience: New is a

In my experience:

New is a NEW you have not read thread. Updated is a thread you have read that has been added to or a comment edited.

Just what it says

"New" means it's a new thread which you have not read at all.

"Updated" means that there is a new or modified post in a thread which you have already read.

This thread was marked "New" when I saw it just now.  As soon as someone adds another response after this, it'll be marked "Updated" until I read it again.

My observation

It appears on my screen as:

New in the post title = a brand new post (and possibly replies) you have not read

Updated in the post title = original post has been changed in a post you have read

XX New in replies column = new replies to a post you have read
