I just installed a new Synology NAS (network attached storage) box on my computer network at home. It's currently configured with 5.5TB of raid 5 storage and has DLNA to stream video to my blue-ray player. So I thought maybe I should re-render some of the videos that went with past issues of MRH in hi-def. Then I thought I should share the them. Here are a few.

This is the April 2009 companion video for the Up the Creek column that shows how I installed the lift up hatch in Oakhill on the BC&SJ.

This is a re-render in HD (720p) of the MRH Theater video from June 2009. Jim Reardon shows off his layout with mudhens assaulting the grades on his basement empire. Black Box

Charlie, Were these videos created using Flash, or I am missing something? All I get is a black box. Thanks, Glenn

Not flash...

No, these are not flash video. They're .mp4 files I uploaded to YouTube. Can you play other YouTube videos embedded in the MRH forum?

As an alternative I've added direct links to YouTube for each of them.

Direct YouTube Links Are Great

Joe,

Would it be possible to have the direct YouTube link for all the videos? or a least those posted by the staff?  For whatever reason when I attempt to view the videos, my machine drops into Abode Flash and since I am working with a Firefox browser the set up immediately crashes.  These three were easily accessed and I was able to enjoy the video for the first time since Adobe Flash 11.xx was introduced.

Thanks,

mp4 Video Link

Charlie,

I have no idea why the video links didn't work before and I am assuming all you did was edit the original post to include the YouTube links. However, the video boxes now work as expected. I normally have no issues with video unless they are created with Flash. I won't install Flash on my systems, so obviously can't view them.

Thanks much,

Glenn

Flash and Firefox

I do have flash configured on my Windows 7 PC but I assure you, none of these videos are flash based. They were all rendered to .mp4 and uploaded to YouTube.  YouTube does proprietary processing on the videos but they don't use flash either -- if they did iPhones and iPads couldn't show YouTube videos.

I do use FireFox and had no problem looking at these videos embedded in the MRH forum posts so I don't know what's wrong. One quick question though, do you use Skype? I've seen some compatibility issues between Skype and Firefox in the past when certain libraries are involved. Sorry, I can't remember which libraries.

Cheers,

Charlie

FLV vs SWF

Charlie, YouTube are Flash videos (FLV). I believe you are confusing Flash Shockwave (SWF) with Flash video. SWF doesn't work on iDevices.

Skype, Firefox, Windows Vista

Charlie, I don't have Skype loaded on this machine and I have problems with Flash and Firefox.

Different Browsers are handy to have

Tom, install Google Chrome. It has no problems with Flash video. Also, MRH works much better on Chrome. Firefox is my default browser but for some situations Chrome works better.

Unfortunately, PCs assume Flash

Unfortunately, PCs assume Flash video. For iOS devices, YouTube knows to play the HTML5 version, but Flash is still the default on PCs.

If instead you want the video on PCs to play the HTML5 version, you need to tell YouTube that's what you want. To do that, go to this link and join the HTML5 trial:

http://www.youtube.com/html5

That also should solve your Flash/Firefox woes. I've done it and the videos now play great in Firefox with NO Flash needed.
