Many people are very serious about the names of their railroad, towns, cities, and businesses - I'm not one of them.  If you are strictly protoypical you may have to stick to actual names although many "real" names are humorous.

So here are a few of my favorites that I came up with:

"Hum-Drums" - "We're always trying to drum up business"  (For a manufacturer / distributor of drums & barrels - owner Ima Drum)

"Fluke Transformers Mfg" - "When we make a great transformer, it's a Fluke!" (For a manufacturer of transformers - line or large industrial)

"Sir Locks-Alot" - "Be Safe at Knight!" (For a locksmith that also sells safes, locks, keys, etc).

I am going to use the "Fluke Transformer Mfg" on my newest version of the railroad and may use the others.

I'm curious to here what fun names you thought of or have seen for railroad, towns, cities, and businesses.  Please share so we can all enjoy!

I know of a narrow gauge

I know of a narrow gauge layout that has a nauga farm. Naugas look just like cows, but come in colors like blue and chartreuse (this is the 1950s railroad). They are transported in stock cars to the slaughterhouse where their (very tender) meat is butchered. The skins are sent next door to the tannery. That's where Naugahyde comes from!

Mines, all mines.

I hope to have some mines on my layout when ever I get to build one again. They will all be owned by the Minol Mining Company. There will be at least two mines, the Itsol mine, and the Datol mine. There is talk of opening a third mind called the Yural Mine. All of these mine Greedium which looks a lot like coal but is really much more valuble.

A couple of mine.....

"Upthuh Creek"  Also, in the same vein as John Allen and the Akinbach Mtns. I used to call the mountain range on one of my N scale layouts  "The Sighatticas"  Yes that's the way I spelled them even though I'm driving the spell checker crazy right now. One last one that isn't mine but I heard way back and always got a chuckle from "Cinderella Shipping and Freight.  When it absolutely has to be there before midnight!"

Pun Names Used to be Popular

Back in the 50s and 60s pun and other cutesy names were popular.  I remember a few:

Driwrought Lumber Company

Barque & Knott Lumber Company

Rhea Produce Company

Thrust & Parry Fence Company

Goza-Ganstha Grain Coop

Miracle Chair Company (If it's a good chair, it's a Miracle)

But my favorite was the Carter's Little River Mills (sadly, only the older readers will likely get this one).

I have to admit, I'm using the Sean Cannery Company on my own layout.

Pun names=protypical

You still see pun based names, but here's one I haven't seen irl or online:

The local boxing gym, one of the best in the business--a great school of the sweet science:  Putahurton U.

I'm debating between that, and Murphy's Gym, as a tribute to the place I learned the fine art of boxing.

Great name for what the mines on your railroad are putting in the cars if you can't decide between coal, iron ore or cinnabar.

names

I remember the miracle chair co being used to hide a hole in the backdrop on a layout years ago, I think the mags were about 60 cents then, and much thicker. One of John Armstrong's was the E-bolt hardware with the slogan nutz to you, Demaigne yard and the town of Bee Haven, every year they have a pageant and crown Miss Bee Haven. I am sure there are lots more.

Stock broker mergers

I always thought when Merrill Lynch merged with Drexel Burnham that they should have named the new firm Lynch and Burnham ...

But I guess stock brokers have no sense of humor. (wink)

A friend . . .

was looking for a place after veterinary school. He almost joined a clinic until he thought about the receptionist asking: "Do you want Doctor Killum or Doctor Fix?" real names!

More Names

Many years ago (1960s sometime), MR had an article on the West Agony and Inchoate, which included both the Laydee Zunder Warehouse and Goza-Gansha Grain in the main town of West Agony, which was of course designed as a switching puzzle where it could take forever to spot or pickup just a couple of cars.

Strange Names

There's a junk yard in Frederick, MD that use to be called "Reliable Junk".  I think the name has been changed to "Reliable Recycling".   When we lived in Winston-Salem, NC, the local Sealtest ice cream plant put out a product called "Autocrat Ice Cream".  I think they meant to call it "Aristocrat Ice Cream".  I mentioned it to a neighbor who worked at the plant.  He said he'd tell management, but thought they wouldn't make the correction until they used all the old containers.  We moved before they did.

BAH

I picked up a lot of my equipment to start this hobby at an estate sale.  The layout was named the BAH - Between, Arock, & Hardspot.  They were the names of the three main towns on the layout.
