Is there a section of this website that describes how to use all the tools available to someone posting a message?  I found out how to post pictures by just messing around but there are a number of features that are supported I have no clue how to use.  A detailed "How to post to the MRH website" topic, written, illustrated and kept current by the site owners/support team(?) would be much appreciated.

Should it be the case I simply overlooked something, my apologies (and a request that you point me in the right direction).

I agree

I do not understand some of them and I can not get a post to advance a line. Usually "enter" does that at least in Microsoft Word but it doesn't do if tor me. My computer may be the issue, just don't know. Should be line here. Another thing I do not know is when I hit submit where did it go? Is it checked by moderators or is it an issue with my computer/browser. Bill Michael

Quick Google of the problem says IE9 will sometimes exhibit this behavior. You don't happen to be using IE9, do you?

If so, then you need to try a different browser. The Googling I did said to fix the problem try using Firefox or Chrome.

I believe there was also the suggestion of a backward compatibility setting in MS IEn, but I am not sure what part of the option settings this is done. For me, FireFox is the best solution - faster and more intuitive.

FAQ

Unfortunately the FAQ doesn't cover everything.  I've been trying to get the hang of Link and Anchor for quite a while now.  Eventually I can get it to work, but it usually takes me about 3-4 attempts.  I don't recall whether Quote is mentioned in the FAQ...if you place a quote at the start of a post, how do you get out of it to your own text?   My way is to make sure I have a couple of blank lines before I place the quote, but I'll betcha there's a better way.

A one-stop FAQ that covers all of those useful buttons would be very helpful.

Drupal Quote

That is what Joe refers to as quote hell. It is a Drupal issue. Paste the quote text but do not hit the quote button. Advance a line and place your comment. When all finished, highlight the quote text and hit the quote button.

This is all fine and dandy for those of us who...

...know what Link and Anchor are for (assuming they work) and what Drupal is and what it has to do with anything.  And what of the other less frequently used functions?  Is there a how-to guide for this tool anywhere, on this site or any other?  If I had a dollar for every product I've encountered for model railroading that comes with no/inadequate documentation I could afford all the engines, kits, electronics, etc. I want.    (At least I can get that < - button to work.)

One trick is to hover over each button

One trick is to hover over each button and you will get a tooltip telling you what each button does, like this:

toolbar.jpg

Most of the buttons, like the one shown, are pretty simple in function - the one shown here puts in a horizontal line, like this:

And this text is below the line.

Osmosis is a beautiful thing.

So, I suppose, is floating though it still doesn't tell me what Anchor is for nor what HSPACE and VSPACE do (since I'm no Flash user).  I guess that after 35 years in mainframe IT tech support I should understand by now that nobody (myself included) likes to write user guides or how-to documentation.

Now all I need to do is figure out why your example above shows one more line of buttons than what I see; Maximize and Show Blocks also appear on my first line. (insert unincluded "confused" smiley here)

MIke - I'm a superuser

Mike:

I have myself set up as a superuser. You can request it if you feel you need more power and more photo storage space.

Anchor allows you to put a tag down in your post with a name, then higher up in your post you can have a link like this link here ...

That's only

useful

for

really

long

posts

since

it

lets

you

put

a

link

up

top

to jump down into your post with a single click. You put an anchor at the destination and give it a name (Bottom) and then you select some text at the top of your post for the link, then click the globe with a chain on it and type #Bottom into the hyperlink box and click OK. Now when you click the link up top, it jumps to the "Bottom" anchor label.
