Friends, I would like to present my new Snow Diorama, build by my Friend Stefan Foerg.

When I've some free time, I love to visit the Railpictures.net Archive to find new Ideas for future Dioramas. One of my dreams was to have a snow covered Diorama for some nice Winter action. I've found many cool picture on the Railpictures Website and two of them where exactly what I was looking for.

The first picture was from David Langdon (he gave me the permission to publish his picture here). The little Bridge build from a Flatcar was an eye catcher and a must have for my Diorama.

The second picture from Ross Fotheringham (I've also his permission to publish the picture) shows a nice Bridge that could be build with the stuff from Exactrails.

So I've explained Stefan my Idea and he immediately starts to work.

Jurg, I saw the photo you posted (either here or elsewhere) with the bridge in it and it immediately reminded me of that photo! I Had my suspicions that photo was your inspiration.... Wonderful scenery.

Interesting Stuff

As with the other dioramas, the scenic treatments provide a nice setting for photos, and the snow/ice effects are quite well done.  The photography is first rate too.  Looks like Stefan might not be familiar with North American bridges, as the supports don't coincide with load bearing points, but that may also be a concession to creating the overall look from the prototype photos without having to hack the ExactRail bridges apart.  The overall impact is still fine.

Stunning

... simply stunning.  That's the best snow modeling (as well as everything else) I've ever seen.  Kudos.

What does Stefan use for snow?

I may have missed this in a previous post but what does Stefan use for snow?

Congratulations to you both for a fantastic diorama and fantastic photography.

Kudos to the various model builders as well.  Superb modelling.

Baking Soda snow

Hi Jurg,

Quote:

Stefan uses Baking Soda for the snow.

Please ask Stefan what he mixes it with (just water?), how thick he mixes it and how he applies it, particularly in the close up photo of the pile of logs.  The snow on the logs and trees behind them looks amazingly realistic.

Thanks,

Stefan told me that he uses a mix with water / carpenter glue / and Liquid Soap to fix the baking soda. He use a small sieve to sprinkle the soda. It's the same technique you use to add grass.

Doesn't the baking soda turn yellowish after a while?

Everything Stefan does seems magical

Jürg,

Stefan has amazing talent. I don't think I will ever attain anything close to his abilities. I can't wait to see what he does next.

Baking Soda VS mechs/Wheels, etc

Dear Jurg,

I know it may also be a "ask again in 2 years" issue, but baking soda if often used as a logical solution for scale snow, only to be (re)-discovered as a mild corrosive which attacks mechs and wheels. Have you seen any evidence of this?

Happy Modelling,

Your first prototype photo

JR I held off commenting earlier, but since i don't believe that anyone else has identified the location of your first prototype photo, I will. That little flatcar bridge was located just west of Pinecliff on the former D&SL, then D&RGW, now UP line from Denver to the Moffat Tunnel. I say that it was located there, As i believe that it was replaced in the last year or so. Jeff Fry Will Tennessee Pass fit in my basement?

Dear Prof Klyzlr

The baking Soda on the two CP Engines from David Terdich are almost glued on a year ago and I can not find any corrosions yet, I can imagine that in humid circumstances the baking Soda will be a bit aggressive. Let's see what the future brings
