I'm using the latest version of Google Chrome to read MRH; however, recently it's "in the mud"; that is, it is very SLOW on some (not all) pages.  I am not having this trouble when using IE or Firefox.  Is anyone else having this problem?  Some pages never come up at all!

***UPDATE***

I am having this trouble with other browsers.  It's taking much longer to navigate the site than it used to.  And yes, I've tried other computers - and no, it's not my network as all other websites are fine.

Chrome is very slooooowwwwww at times!

Rich your not alone.  Chrome at times is very slow as I think the cache built in to it is either full and doesn't self purge or it's a conflict with some of it's extensions or plug ins.  I almost use Firefox all the time now as it's the fastest on my dinosaur of a PC.

Could also be an internet "bottle neck" in your area.

Sometimes

I have noticed at times over the last while that it will sit for a while when trying to load a page.  Its intermittent, but its a regular occurrence for me.  Also using Chrome, but I still think Chrome would outperform IE in the same circumstances.

Rich, I have test driven

Rich, I have test driven Chrome from time to time. With each new update, I install it test it and then delete it.

I keep going back to either IE or Firefox. Using Ccleaner from Piriform allows me to keep IE9 nice and clean and fast.

To me Chrome is a distant 3rd in the browser race.

Firefox has been slow too!

I find that it has been slow as well. Long wait times, sometimes not loading at all. I wonder if it is the hosting server being overwhelmed with all the traffic...

Sure reminds me of dial up.....

I have Firefox set up to tell

I have Firefox set up to tell me what URL it is loading or waiting for in the bottom left corner. Recently, while loading pages here at MRH, it frequently stalls on "model-trains-universe.com".

I believe (after perusing the page source) that "model-trains-universe.com" is the site that serves up the ads for MRH sponsors and advertisers.

Joe, you may want to look at the performance of whatever infrastructure "model-trains-universe.com" is using, as it currently appears to be causing slow page loading issues.

...jim

Chrome does the ID of loading page by default and I have made the same observation as you. I like Chrome and use it almost exclusively. I only use IE when the web site REQUIRES IE to display properly.

Banner Ads

MRH has page loading delays for me as well. The site first developed this problem when the banner ad feature was enabled. It has been that way ever since. Some days/time real bad other days/time not so much or at all.

I once set up individual browser windows side-by-side (IE9, Chrome, FF) and then clicked the page refresh on each to see if browser was the problem. The problem appears to be traffic load, not browser. Refreshing the page, regardless of browser, takes anywhere from instantaneous to greater than 30 seconds to load. A page would load immediately on one browser and then take a long time on another. Refresh again and the browser that loaded immediately the first time now takes a long time while the other is fast. I don't think browser selection is the problem.

It is almost as if something is getting randomly hung up on the serving side.

Same problem plus...

the pages are not refreshing with Firefox. IE does refresh but has a speed problem too. As does my Samsung.

I thought it might be just me.

Welcome to the internet...

What I notice

is its mostly the side menu panel and posts that take time to come up.  The top menu and banner show up right away and it seems to delay loading the side panel.

Geared

Loading

Yup, I've had similar problems and I'm using IE. Hate Google Chrome, to much garbage. Slow side panel loading is also my observation. Site wouldn't close down either, so I did a complete reboot asap.

Most commonly when I'm experiencing delays, I see the message "Transferring data from svc.webspellchecker.net" in the status line of my browser (Firefox).  This isn't something new though, it has been going on for a very long time.  I've just learned to live with it.

Chrome doesn't seem to be the best choice

Chrome doesn't seem to be the best choice for reading our online edition - in our testing, it's generally the slowest of the browsers with the online edition.

Our online edition is hosted by Amazon's S3 storage, and we're taking steps to leverage their cloud service. This service is "smart", meaning if you are located in Australia, it won't use a server in New York, it will serve up a copy of the online magazine from a server in Australia - getting the best speed possible.

We're not quite there yet, but this is where we're going.

Modern technology is simply amazing, and stuff like this is becoming more affordable every day.
