I was given a locomotive from a friend and was told that it is roughly 40 years old. After some cleaning up, it runs like a champ. I am trying to identify the make and model of the loco (the "real" manufacturer and model), and possibly the maker of the train (HO gauge). The only identifying stamping is on the fuel tank cover and it says "Made in Yugoslavia". I'm sure that someone will immediately recognize the locomotive, but I have been looking at various photos and have come up empty. Thanks, Rich

Alco C-628

Looks like an Alco C-628, probably the old AHM/IHC model.  Here's a prototype photo of D&H 601  http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/dh/dh601ags.jpg.

I'll agree!

I believe also that it is an old AHM/IHC model.  Probably made by ROCO in Austria fro IHC or AHM.  Does it have all wheel drive? or does it have a power truck arraingment?  All wheel drive = IHC.  Power truck = AHM.

Thanks!

You hit it on the head, thanks. It has, I believe, AWD, as the motor is centered on the frame with drive axles powering a transfer case on the trucks. Now I am thinking of putting a Digitraxx DCC decoder in it. Mystery solved. Thanks again.

Made in Yugoslavia!

I Agree,

That it is a AHM or IHC model, but it is built by Mehano in Yugoslavia, which is now Slovenia. I found their drive trains were better than many of the older AHM models. Mehano models have been sold under the AHM, IHC, Life like, Model power, and the Mehano labels.  Their steam models are reliable with can motors, and both sides of the engine picking up power.

The Mehano models are no longer imported, but many used and some new models can still be found. They may be active in the European Market.

Regards,

John

Life Like

I will say its a Life Like C628.  I bought several a couple decades ago and painted two for the PRR and was going to paint up a couple for the LV, but never got around to it.

Here's some on e-bay:

Did any one mention that

Did any one mention that looking on the bottom of the fuel tank or inside of the body shell might shed some more results on this. It does look like the old life like and model power engines of days gone by.

There may also be something stamped into the sides of the gear boxes as well, I have seen that on some engines just do not remember which ones now.

As John said

It is definitely a Mehano model. It was produced for AHM, IHC and ModelbPower to name a few. This design was produced well into the 1990's if not ater. Larry

Harry's locos

Dear Harry, As you're likely looking for the ID of a different loco, I'd suggest possibly starting a seperate thread, and at the least posting some pics so we know what we're hunting for? If you need assistance posting pics, Reccomend checking this How-to thread out... https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/help/how-to-post-an-image Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

Loco Identification

Hi Pro Klyzir

Many thanks for coming back to me,  so sorry it has taken so long to get back to you but I have been a tad busy.   As requested I have attached a photo of the locos I am trying to identify.

I have closely examined each one and cannot find any identification marks.

many thanks HarryH

Dear Harry,

A shot of the bottom of each loco would help confirm my hunches and narrow-down the specific production eras,
