A great guy and modeler

It is always great to  see Dick's layout. Being from New England I have been fortunate to have visited The Hoosac Valley many times.  Here are a couple of photos of a more recent vintage and a photo of Hoosac  Valley powerXSTAGING.JPG %20POWER.JPG CV700.JPG APERMILL.JPG VSAWMILL.JPG cenicked.JPG ag%20cov.JPG hireJNCT.JPG

Absolutely splendid, Mr. E

Absolutely splendid, Mr. Elwell ! The work and artistry of years shines everywhere ! My only kvetch is Photo #40 - I don't believe the loco on that Shooter is an ALCO PA. I can hear the whine of the EMD superchargers all the way in Pittsburgh. Gotta be an EMD, E-8, right ?

Excellent and wonderful!

This layout is one of the best I know! I love it! What a good job!

It's full of realistic scenes and details. The compositions are great!

The fall season is the best for a layout!

That's a wonderful layout.

Bravo Dick Elwell!

Love the Details

I'm wondering if it would be possible for the MRH staff to insert images of layouts like this one with a "full bleed"... i.e., does the MRH online magazine need to have white borders around images if the magazine isn't being printed?   I, like many who read the magazine, am primarily interested in looking at other people's layouts in detail.  As such, the larger the image is the happier I am so I can see all the fine detail.

Sincerely,

If you ever have the opportunity, this is a layout to see in person. Photos here age great, but a visit is even greater.

We are somewhat limited in what we can put into the magazine, so we aim to post downsized images that are about 300 DPI, which does allow you to zoom in and study the photos if you want. For most articles, being able to do a 200% zoom on the magazine photos is sufficient. That said, the PDF is compressed to make it not too large -- we target something around 30-50 MB.

If we published the highest resolution possible, then each magazine would be more like 1 GB. Instead, we've posted high resolution photos from the layout article to this month's bonus downloads. But note, this zip file download with circa 40 hi-res images is 1 GB.

So if you want huge high resolution photos from the article, just visit this month's bonus downloads:

Dick Elwell's Hoosac Valley

I visited Dick's layout ten or twelve years ago, on a tour of great Massachusetts model railroads that included the Franklin and South Manchester in Peabody and Jimmy Deignan's beautiful layout in Franklin, Massachusetts.  I thought Elwell's layout was superb then and revisiting it in MRH has only confirmed my view.

A Favorite Brilliantly Presented

A familiar and favorite layout that I have seen in many versions and many publications over many years.

This is hands-down the best presentation ever of Dick’s layout and one of the very best articles of its type that I have ever seen since I began model railroading in 1967.

The presentation was thoughtful, and the quality of the captions and photographs were superb.

Moving this article onto the forum front page due to Dick Elwell's passing. Check out his amazing layout … one of the greats. He will be sorely missed.

As a modeler of New England, Dick's work has been one of the primary influences on my layout design. He has been one of the best.
