Good job Les. The video demonstration certainly enhances the explanation of your technique. I would have liked to have seen how you applied the brick paper to the pilasters without having an edge show where it meets the wall. I would have rated this with the maximum stars but the rating system doesn't seem to be working.

Brick Paper edge

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked them!

I actually haven't done anything to the side of the brick paper yet, the edges are not very visible except in certain areas. I will be covering those edges (carefully)  with a sharpie marker of a similar or darker brick color. I'll report on that in my next column.

What did you think about the videos vs text and pictures?

Video vs text

Les,

The video and narrative were excellent - the explanation was clear and the area was well lit with a good close up of the work as it progressed. It sounded like you had thought out your narrative in advance so that it was concise and not filled with lots of umms, ands, assorted throat clearings and background noise.

Video is a great way demonstrate a technique as long as it is presented in the manner you presented it.

It's amazing what video editing can do

Mike:

It's amazing what video editing can do - some of the credit goes to Charlie Comstock who edited these videos. He worked to make Les sound as good as possible, including editing out any long pauses.

When it comes to voice-overs, we can get away with a lot to make you sound good - not unlke what we try to do on the text side to make your prose read as nicely as possible.

Regardless, Les' videos added a lot to this issue's column. I for one would like to see more videos from Les!

Yes, loved the videos this month, Les!  I always enjoy the reports you do from shows too.  Keep the videos coming if you can.  I know it's a lot of extra work but it is appreciated!

Thanks Dave, I'm glad you liked it, as for the "umms , ands and the like",  I have to give credit to Charlie for the editing I really do sound better than I thought!

It's amazing what video editing can do

As Joe has said, editing is the answer to a flawless video and Charlie deserves a lot of the credit. When preparing a video I usually do several takes and any errors in one take can be corrected in another. The idea is to give the editor plenty of video to enable him to make one good cut.

Although as I gain more experience, I try to limit the goofs to a minimum making his job easier.

Thanks boss, you make me blush.... more videos for my columns are part of my plan!

Thanks Kevin, as I look at our EZine I get comments from many, that reading articles on a computer screen puts them off, so I figured I would try videos, now, unless I'm wrong, it's pretty hard to view a video on paper...

As the availability of IPads and similar technologies become more and more affordable that might change the current paradigm, but until then, maybe more videos might ease the pain!

As I embrace making more videos , I really like it and it becomes easier. It is definitely a lot more time consuming but I really feel it is worth the effort. As I make more, I try to limit the amount of "editing" that has to be done and try to make the story flow as seamlessly as possible.

I am also toying with video editing myself...who knows what the future holds.

Man that is great. I have read so many "how-to's" that left me confused but seeing you do it while you talk me through it gives me a lot of confidence and a better understanding of what is going on here. Thank you.

Les' Lighting and walls

The video format is outstanding. I really adds a lot to your article. If all the videos are this well done, I think MRH is going to revolutionize the magazine business.

With poor soldering skills, I've always been reluctant to work on electronic things. Les, you made it look easy. Thanks to your article, I'm going to give it a try.

Thanks, to your innovative e-zine.

Les Halmos LED soldering video AAA+++!!!

Well done! Sometimes certain techniques come across when no steps are left to the imagination demanded by the written page and the still photo. Thank you for helping us try something new and gain the advantage of bringing down to scale something that was previously oversized.

Thank you, I am glad you liked it, I had some problems positioning the camera to get the closeups but all in all it seems to have worked out well.

Les, I have really been enjoying your articles on the roundhouse construction in MRH magazine.  Thanks for all your hard work.  I have been unable to locate the lampshades and LED tester.  Can you provide us with a source?
