Nice piece of 5ft modeling

Before having read this article, I thought you built your layout in the US after having returned home from Afghanistan. Impressive that you really built a model railroad layout in kind of a war zone and then shipped it home.

If I lived in the US, I would apply for membership in your club

painting rails on simulated concrete ties.

Matthew, your article nicely explained painting the "concrete" ties [sleepers] on your track.  What I want to know is how you painted the rails.  I presume you painted them after you painted the ties.  So how did you keep the rail color from messing up your painted ties?  Also, did you use water color or enamel or . . . ?  Thanks!

Rail painting

First thank you Joern. Maybe I can post you a club sticker later, I have a bunch.

The he rails were painted with "Steel Rails" followed by "Rusty rail" Woodland Scenics paint markers. I did that after putting the rail back into the ties. I did that so that the paint would run onto the chairs holding there rails to the ties. Any bleed onto the ties is just rust staining. Like the prototype. I followed the paint markers with some weathering powders as well.

I shouldn't reply on an iPad

I was tired and didn't proof read. I really butchered my response. The rails were painted with paint markers from Woodland Scenics. I think they are enamel. I used two layers to get a depth to the color and followed those with A.I.M. powders to get a brighter fresher rust look. I intentionally let the paint and powder get onto the chairs and a bit onto the ties. Rust staining on the concrete is ok. Hope that clears it up and that this message isn't strewn with typos like my last one.
