MRH Magazine general discussion

ANNOUNCEMENT - Charlie Comstock promoted to Editor, MRH
MRH is pleased to announce that Charlie Comstock has been promoted to Editor of Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine.
My whacky conspiracy theory. . .
I was on FaceBook tonight and Athearn posted pre-production photos of their new SP Bay Window Caboose:

New devices for MRH
As I sit with time to kill at the Las Vegas airport, I thought I'd pass along a couple of things that I saw at this years Consumer Electronic Show.
First up, are the tablets.
Hands down, the best one coming out is the Blackberry Playbook. Despite it's smaller 7" screen size, it is a robust, solid device that showed excellent performance. Should be able to display MRH well, if a bit on the smaller side.
The next best was the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is a decent device, but still not as nice as the Playbook. Also should display MRH decently.
Bachman not responding to issues
I have a wide variety of Bachman engines and I am having some problems with them . I have tryed emailing
them with their service dept. and left phone mesages but get no response from them. I have done this
several times and still no call backs or email from them. Anybody else having the same problem with them.

Two Suggestions for MRH magazine
1. To attract younger hobbyists and hobbyists who want very simple information, have a monthly section named something like "Model Railroading 101", with very simple info like track sizes, joiners, loco types, rolling stock types, etc., etc. etc. The section would be no more than one page, and would be listed in the table of contents.
2. To attract model railroad software users, have a regular monthly review of at least one model railroading software program. (This might also help attract software company advertisers.)

Suggestion for forum and blog screens
It would be nice to have something like a "View All" button to see all the posts on a particular forum topic or a blog on one screen.
For example, I've been following the recent "Sequential Trains Ops: Need a "walk through" please?" forum topic. Many great, thorough posts! So I would would like to copy/paste the posts into a document and make it into an "article" for myself.
I know that I can copy/paste one screen at a time, but it would be really nice to do it just once with a "View All" button.
This is great weather for working on the railroad
Here in NYC we have a blizzard. We have about 14 inches on the ground and it cold (about 22 degrees fahrenheit) with wind gusts up to 60 mph. Yes, that's 60 MPH. Th elast time we had winds like that notonly did we trees come down, but we also lost power as the trees took the power lines down with them. Now you'd think things like that wouldn't happen here in NYC, but Queens not like the other boroughs of the City since it has many areas which are more like what you would think represent suburbia. Right now I am siting in my office and listening to the winds blowing the snow sideways.
Gray primer on gray plastic
I have new Atlas undec locos. They are a light-colored gray plastic. Do I need to spray them with gray primer? I'm painting acrylic yellow. I'm wondering if the primer is formulated differently to "regular" paint, allowing a better adhesion, as I have heard acrylic paint doesn't stick as well as the older enamel kind. If not an issue, is the Atlas gray light enough to accept yellow? Thanks.
MRH gets quoted...
Well it had to happen eventually. MRH is quoted in Tony Koester's new book Model Railroading from Prototype to Layout. If you haven' seen it, look at page 80. The quote is from Issue 4 and refers to Marty McGuirks column where he talks about a place one can find Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. Kudos to Marty and the magazine.
So now for the $64 dollar question, does Tony Koester read MRH? or di he get this information from Marty?
