California Zephyr service stop pics

......... that I found in a 1953 Popular Mechanics at:

go to the contents pull-down and look for "10 minute service" or "page 72". A LOT happens during such a short stop!.

Shift from steam to diesel?

I am curious: being in the beginning of a return to the hobby after so many years away I am noticing some significant differences in the themes and equipment for most of the layouts I see here and in other sites.  20 years ago, steam was king.  Logging and narrow gage were big. Western settings predominated. Model-building and kitbashing were proud occupations and talents.

Today, from what I can see, contemporary era East Coast and Mid-West diesel operations are the norm. Equipment is ready-to-run from the box.

More than an EM-1

Well, folks, it looks like Bachmann is coming out with a Mogul, an ALCO S-4 and ALCO FA2/FB2's in addition to the BeanO EM-1.

The Mogul reminds me of a GB&W Mogul. It will be a nice addition considering that the steam locomotives usually announced are large ones.

Now, if only someone would do a Harriman Pacific (light or heavy, machts nichts to me).

Hobby Shops in Portland, OR

I'll be in Portland, OR for a few days next week attending the National GTO Convention (my other hobby).  I would also like to visit a RR hobby shop or two.  I don't need anything special other than some Polly Scale paint and Floquil paint pens.  Could anyone recommend model railroad shops in Portland or the surrounding area that have a good selection of paint and other stuff?

My uninvited Guest...

So I've been wondering why my layout has been smelling a little gamey the last day or so and noticed it was in the vicinity of some of the track I recently ballasted.  I'd been suspicious that is was something in the ballast I recently put down by my transload facility but coudln't put my finger on what could be causing it.

Reading MRH on an Android tablet

Hi Everyone,

I have a rooted Nook Color(which means it is now a full android tablet instead of the hobbled version of android it ships with).  I am looking for a better way to read MRH in pdf format.  I have tried Aldiko and Adobe reader.  Both have extremely long page load times and none of the links work(you can't click on index, etc...)

So what do you guys use?

? about reading the online magazine

I have the last six issues on this computer (a laptop) waiting to be read.  However, I do all my reading laying in bed at night.  The idea of taking this laptop to bed and trying to read the issues does not sound appealing or particularly comfortable.
