I mixed Woodland Scenics Smooth It as the instructions recommended. I then poured the mixture into a number of areas defined with the recommended tape.

The results were not good. The mixture was thicker than cake batter. Did not flow at all. None of the areas are completely filled and certainly not level.

Now I have to mix more and topcoat it. Does anyone have any suggestions based on their experience they can share.

Umm, in the photos I see on

Umm, in the photos I see on WS age they show the road being "screed" off with some sort of plastic putty knife or something along that line. Did you try to level it as it was setting up? If not I have no idea how you expected this to level.  If it was trully self leveling it would be of no use to those that do not need a 'level' road but just a 'flat' road. Like going up a hill.

So I will bet you needed to flatten it with some sort of tool to strike it off.

Leveling?

Doug,

I did, watched their video. The problem was that the mixture was too thick. I think had it been thinner, it would have been easier to level.

I had used the same product on a past layout years ago and don't remember having a problem.

Pancake Batter

I use Smooth-It also for roads and it needs to be thick, but thin enough like pancake batter to pour and smooth properly.   I follow the mixing instructions but you need to slowly add small amounts of water until right thickness and texture is reached, even if a little more water is needed.  You can sand out any weak spots and fill in any pot holes after it dries(just like a real road).

Another idea is to add some scoops of Durham's Water Putty.  This mixed with the Smooth-it makes an good aged concrete color.

How old was the Smooth it?

I have run into some issues in the past with Woodland Senics products not setting up or setting up so fast you dont get the results you are looking for. I follow the same mixing procedures every time to the point that i have found the best combo of water and mix and wrote them down in kind of a recepie box. However, I have discoverd these products DO have a shelf life. You cant tell how long they have been sitting on the shelf of the hobby store before you get them and i have found the older they are , the more problembs you have. I always try to get them directly from woodland senics and then i know they are realitvy new. This seems to greatly reduce performance issues. Hope this helps Bob.
