Welcome to my new adventure. After many years of inactivity, a friend asked my help in dismantling his 24'x16' layout which has spurred me into creating it a new home. The problem is that I don't really have a space quite like his and wouldn't have designed a railway like his (nor really want one like that). My space is similar in size but in plan only. The end walls slope from 4' height up to 11' at the center. The overall size is the same but to the exterior of the walls so everything is shorter and narrower. His design was accessed from the end with tunback loops at either side and a peninsula that provided additional mainline length. My space enters from the long side. I also don't really want a round and round type of railroad and would like to create a staging area for the "rest of the world". Obviously this isn't meant to represent Hawaii! I decided to move one of the yards to become the staging area and the other to the center of the room to represent a branch line yard. The branch will connect at an interchange with the mainline to pick up and drop blocks or cuts of cars. This area may also have local switching for the mainline as that operator may not have much else to do. When visitors come then two or three cabs could keep trains running in and out of staging for a good show. My interest is shortline and switching. 90% of the time this will be a one man show. There are other modelers on the island but we live 40-50 miles apart where gas is 4.50 a gallon and you have to have a pickup or a 4 wheel drive to get around. Not easy for the guy on fixed income. One friend writes a column in the Gazzette but is about 60 miles from here. His interest in models and narrow gauge has diverted my attention more than once but he hasn't shown much interest in operation as I have. Does anyone know how to upload photos Forman iPad? The website does not seem to support it. For now I'll have to be descriptive but would rather be out in the barn and share some pictures now and then. The weeks seem pretty long by Thursday evening. This weekend should provide some opportunity to set up some of the old railroad and see what can stay and what needs to change.

Photos in blog

I've been wondering how to include the photos with the text. Honestly I have been posting as a way to record my progress and elicit some feedback and don't spend much time taking photos to post. If Joe reads these perhaps he can point me into the help section on pasting into the blog. Neil Umauma Railway & Navigation, Hawaii
