I'm trying to get as much scenery base down as possible instead of super detailing each section.  My latest work is in the back right of the alcove area and as usual I build the sections as separate units so that I can work on them in comfort at my table.  Notice the very nice work my artist is doing on the mural, which is still a work in process.

Here you can see the area in the right back corner behind the upper track.

The base is 1" foam with 1" x 2" wood reinforcement on the bottom.  The back higher curved area is made from hot gluing 2" wide foam pieces angled to match the curve of the corner wall.  The front cut is stacked & glued leftover pieces.  A web of cardboard is glued from front to back to form the contour.

Everything was covered with plaster cloth and then a thin layer of plaster to smooth and fill the voids in the cloth.

The rock cut was completed by carving plaster rocks and then landscaping was added.  I'll wait until the very last to add trees and final details.

This is a close up of some of the rock work.

This is a track view.  Of course, there will be a rock cut wall on the other side of the tracks.

About those works in progress...

Is that smooth-textured area on the backdrop toward the right of the 3-D hill intended to have a town or other 2-D foreground detail added?

Future town

Rob,

There will be a small town on the mural, but not back in the corner.  It will be on the right wall closer to the entrance to the alcove.  The main "eye catcher" in the back right corner will be a gravel plant serviced by the lower track.

Thanks, Charlie

Charlie,

Thank you for your kind words on my carved rocks.  I always have a model handy to use as an example as my wife says that I've "got rocks in my head"!  Of course, I know that she means that in love!
