Why does the Roseburg mill in Weed, CA haul logs several hundred miles with CORP to their mill in Roseburg,OR?  I know it takes something like 200 trucks off I5 every week but why haul them in the first place?  Why not process them at the mill the start from?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Different Mills For Different Products

The mill in Weed only produces softwood veneer according to their website.

Those logs must be destined for other products.

It could be that the Roseburg, Or. mill processes

lumber from a bunch of locations all over Oregon, Northern Cal., and perhaps even So Washington State.  It is probably less expensive to ship the logs via rail than to build new mills all over the areas where they cut the timber.  The reason for using rail rather than trucks is that the only advantage trucks have is the ability to get an individual shipment to a destination quicker.  For bulk items like logs, lumber, coal, crude oil, etc. trains are far more fuel efficient than trucks, the the comodities are not perishable.

Thanks Guys

So I'm taking it the mill is used a loading point for the other mills and not some much as the Weed mill is sending "their" logs to Dillard for processing

You would need to research CORP to be sure.

I was just making an educated guess based on the fact that it was suggested in your original post that they are shipping logs to another mill for processing.

It's A Matter Of

Where suitable lumber is located, either from their own lands or from timber sales by other entities, where their mills are, and the mills' particular timber needs. Management will no doubt cost out all alternatives and select the most appropriate for the available timber types, grades, and quantities. To get definitive answers, contact the company. Absent published company information or insider knowledge, all anyone here can do is speculate.

Weed to Roseburg on CORP?

Has CORP started hauling over the Siskiyou's again? I know they've gotten a bunch of GP20D's that would theoretically make it more economical to do so, but I hadn't heard that they'd started doing it.

My Bad

Sorry Jeff I should have used the past tense.  I haven't heard anything more (but have looked too hard either) more than the test from Weed to Medford.  That can be seen here for those interested http://www.snowcrest.net/photobob/tcorp.html

I was was watching (again) Great Shortlines West http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=great+shortlines+west and it got me thinking about it.  I checked in The Siskiyou Line book http://www.amazon.com/Siskiyou-Line-Documentary-Adventure-Railroading/dp/0936738049/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1304655443&sr=1-2 and it was shown in there too so they have been doing it for awhile.
