I remember a while back a Tsunami decoder was released where you could set the locomotive into a record mode, run it around the layout, stopping and starting it as you wish, and later, whenever you want, replay those motions without intervention as you run another train or just plain watch.

So, not being an electronic's expert, here are my questions:

  1. How does this work? Does the decoder record the commands it was given and store them in memory for later, or does the DCC system record the commands it sends, and plays them back to the locomotive later.
  2. Which decoders is this function in, to see if I a) have them already, orb) can install them in my steam locomotives.
  3. If it is in most modern Tsunami decoders, then how do I program it? Even if not, it would be good to know.

Just curious.

Thanks!

Are you sure it was a Tsunami Decoder?

I don't ever recall and of the Tusnami Decoders having this opion.  There was (at least for a time) Loksound decoders (which are QSI based I believe) which had this option.  I'm sticking with Tsunami though so I never really explored that option.

It was QSI

Sorry, it was a QSI. I saw it about a year ago in a Model Railroader Mag video.

Contact Qsi.

This isn't to say someone here won't be able to help you, but you might get a quiicker answer by contacting the manufacturer directly.

Recordable decoders

The BLI Paragon 2 locomotives have the ability to record all their DCC movements and sounds for later "hands free" playback.  I think they use their own proprietary decoder though.

This site may help

In my opinion I found that soundtraxx (Tsunami) make the best sound recordings and have the largest  selection as well as sound tests you can listen to and if you check their following site you may find what your looking for.

http://www.soundtraxx.com/index.php

before  Soundtraxx came on the scene their were a few decoders that you could record your own sound on. I looked at a few sites that sold these at one time but didn't find any that you could record your own sounds on.

Good luck in your search.

About the "recordable"

About the "recordable" function I'm sure this was included in my Paragon BLI PA (N scale) .

I remember well reading the short manual they described as "macro recording". I can be more detailed later at home.

About Soundtraxx, I agree the sound is one of the best , if not THE best in the market, but I've to underline Soundtraxx decoders can't record or can't be loaded with your own sound track.

Some other do this as Locksound, Esu etc.

I'm Not sure But I believe Lenz makes a recordable Decoder

I remember a tutorial on the lenz site a few years back with instructions on how to add sound to decoders But, I can't find it and I will keep looking. I don't beleive it was a decoder but a sound recorder chip that you could connect to the Lenz decoders.

Still looking on the GERMAN site for it.

UPDATE : No I was wrong They don't make a recordable sound chip. But it is being discussed within the company for those that wish to add their own sound by maybe 2013

JMRI can do this. Do a search

JMRI can do this. Do a search for "JMRI auto active train". It might take a little work to get it to setup. I would think maybe setting up blocks and sensors. Then again if your only running that one train you wouldnt need sensors and blocks. Unless you need the train to start and stop in an exact section. JMRI has a "Virtual Engineer" mode that you can use. I havent tried any of this but plan on doing just that once I get my track laid.

Well, I've found some time to scan a page from my BLI PA3 and his Paragon QSI decoder with description of his Macro recording.

Hope this can help
