Yes, we're finally doing the forum move for real (again). This time the testing looks quite good other than one link glitch which the developers have fixed. We will be resequencing the forum timestamps on Fri, Dec 17 to match the Drupal post sort order. At 11:59PM Pacific on Friday, Dec 17, this forum will become read only. Then if all goes well, we will open up next Monday, Dec 20, on the new forum. No doubt some of you will need login assistance, we will be standing by to help you out.

Login Video

Is the Login Video you posted several weeks ago still relevant?

I think I have it saved "somewhere". Need to find it in my folders.

It's not called the spam button but yes, moderators can unpublish / delete content just as they can on here. We try to have enough moderators that we have a "follow the sun" moderator online some time throughout each 24 hours.

The online-magazine portion is completely different and hosted by another company. You should still be able to download magazines as well.

Here’s what will happen

Okay here’s what will happen.

1. Today, I will run the full timestamp resequence on the current forum to get the timestamp order to match the Drupal post order.
2. Tonight, we will lock the current forum to read only status at 11:59 pm Pacific time. You can still read everything, just no new posts. The login box on the old forum will disappear, because you will need to login on the new forum.
3. We will copy the full old forum database and send it to the developers for loading.
4. The developers will totally blow away the new forums test load data and do a complete fresh reload with the copy of the old forum data.
5. The new forum will be set as read only with a forum lock password to keep you out until it’s ready.
6. Once the conversion is complete and things look good, recent posts on this site will go to new forum, we’re expecting sometime on Monday.

On the new forum, you can read it without logging in, or you can log in and post, etc. Your login, if you’ve been testing the new forum, will be reset and you will have to login brand new and set a password again.

For a few days, clicking old forum bookmarks will take you to the old forum posts still.

After a few days, we will put 301 redirects in place on the old site so any attempt to access links to the old forum will automatically redirect you to the same thread on the new forum.

Once we’re happy the 301 redirects are working, the old forum posts will all be deleted. Then on to phase two, moving the other pages off Drupal to mrhmag.com, the new shorter website name. Right now, model-railroad-hobbyist.com is our main domain name and mrhmag.com is an alias. In phase 2, mrhmag.com will become the main domain name and model-railroad-hobbyist.com will become the alias, and we will launch an all new mobile-friendly website with a fresh new look.

We will then be off Drupal completely and be on all new hosting with all new URLs. They will be: mrhmag.com — our fresh new website forum.mrhmag.com — our new updated forum sub site re.mrhmag.com — our new subsite dedicated to Running Extra with a paywall and full online/download reading access to MRH RE issues. store.mrhmag.com — the MRH Store subsite, already live.

Email notifications

The new forum looks great! Thanks for all the hard work.

Will there be an email notification option for replies to threads you started, etc.?

For JoeG

Hi Joe,

Quote:

Will there be an email notification option for replies to threads you started, etc.?

This can be set up under "notifications" in your user profile once the new forum is up and running, The copy of the new forum you are currently looking at will be gone in a few hours and will emerge as a "new butterfly" sometime in the next few days. So, it is a bit useless trying to set it up now.

Once the move starts to happen, please be patient and "do not go into the pool until advised that it it safe for swimmers"  by joef. The wait will be worth the "withdrawal symptoms".

Regards,

John Garaty

Hopefully my last post on the old forum...

If I have to post again on the old forum software, the conversion must have failed.

So here's to the future (and I don't mean the floor product we use to provide a better surface for decals.)

But, But,

What will I do without people to debate the fine art of model railroading with?

Poking a bit of fun at myself folks, if ya can't do that ya got no business poking fun at anybody else....

Good luck Joe, hope all goes well! See you on the other side!

"See you on the other side!"

Wait! Wait! Wait!  Is that a Battlestar Galactica reference?

If it is, you'll understand the question. If it isn't, there have to be some fans here to explain it.
