Hello all,

My buddy Mike Ostertag and I created a new podcast called the Section Section Podcast, where its just regular guys talking about model railroading.

In the first episode we talk about what's on our workbench, a Shortline Railroad you can model a tip you can use on your model railroad and our main topic of the STATE OF MODEL RAILROADING!

You can check us on YouTube as well as where you find all of your favorite podcasts!

Well done

Andy - That first one is great and I like that you guys have such a great rappor. The transitions between different segment could use some fancy graphics but the idea of touching on various things is very cool. If you have a list then consider using it to promote the next podcast or video-cast or whatever.

I’d like to hear each of you better. Not sure what else’s to say but I’m looking forward to the next episode!

Thanks for the link Andy!

That was a great first podcast and I hope to see more!  Clicked subscribe after the first minute or so.  Is the plan going to be cycling through co-hosts and guests every episode?

To your question of sponsorships, I'd recommend looking into being funded, at least in part, by donations.  I wouldn't mind pitching in a couple bucks especially if it meant you'd be able to get some really good audio equipment.  Sponsorships can be great but you've got a chance to go in a bit of a different direction.  Not sure how others feel about that but that's my two cents.

Wow, that’s pretty mean-spirited

Wow, that’s pretty mean-spirited. We don’t mind that you may not be a fan of Ken’s content, but you could have said that a lot nicer.

I’m sorry, but being online is not a license to be rude. Folks can be mean to each other on other platforms, but you need to reword that nicer if you don’t want us to put you in probation.

Does the new forum have a provision that will let me opt not to see posts from specific individuals? Some folks spoil an otherwise uplifting experience here.

Opinion noted BR

Clearly BR knows what a real podcast should be like, perhaps he should show us how it's done and make one himself.  It's not like Ken Patterson spent is whole life learning all the skills necessary to make online content or that he puts in an incredible amount of work each month that we get to view for free.

Podcast

The trouble I've found with most podcasts is they spend a lot of time on banter and non essential random stuff (maybe that's negative space in their world?) so 15 minutes of useful info might require over an hour of viewing time. I'd rather watch someone like Towan, Millet, or Marklin get right to the point in a Youtube video.I can't really see any difference in quality between this podcast and a Patterson episode, neither really makes me want to watch the whole thing....DaveB

Thanks for making us aware of your podcast

Thanks for making us aware of your podcast, we appreciate it. Interesting discussion. My only critque would be to work on Mike Ostertag's audio -- it's tinny and hard to hear at times. Ironically, with video, audio matters most. If needed, get Mike a lav mic to use, don't rely on a camera mic.

Jeff: a bunch of us have that ability now and I imagine it will be the same permissions on the new site. I don’t read all the threads but will find one occasionally that attacks the person and not the topic. Zap. Not cool. Now I don’t watch Ken Patterson but have spoken with him and like his energy and passion for the hobby. To each his own.

We encourage critique, just play nice

We like critique on here, and I'd be stupid to expect everyone to like everything. I don't mind people posting and saying they don't like something, including anything we produce or anything produced by our extended staff such as Ken Patterson. Just don't be nasty or mean-spirited about it.

Sadly, todays Internet seems to have made being rude into something of a virtue. That's what third graders do to each other, not adults. Just read our posting guidelines ...

Quote:

Comment on content, not on the contributor. Personal attacks do not help make a point; they only hurt the community and deter users from helping to create a good body of knowledge in a discussion. Derogatory comments about other contributors may be removed by a moderator or the thread may be locked to prevent any further violations. Repeated or egregious personal attacks may lead to blocks.

In this case, we will leave the nasty comment and just move on. We're dealing with the poster offline.

P.S. I know if someone tried to compliment me by saying my content was better than so-and-so's crap, I would not feel good about it. Trying to build someone up by walking over the top of someone else in the process is more discouraging than uplifting.

USB mics

Jumping off of Joe's suggestion for better audio, there are a ton of USB mics out there that work WAY better than the built-in microphones on a computer or web-cam.  Yeti's in particular are a favorite for a lot of people.  The beauty of those mics is you don't need a separate audio mixer or pre-amp before going to the computer.  The downside is there's not as much control over the audio so the results will vary depending on the room's acoustics.

But when set up properly even a cheap microphone can give fantastic results for the money.  The USB mic gets recorded to a separate track and then added to the video during editing, but the built-in mic or the webcam mic also records audio, serving as a backup channel and as a way to align the two audio tracks.

New Podcast and Ken Patterson

I haven't heard the new podcast yet but I look forward to it as soon as I have time, I have it saved on Spotify!

As to Ken Patterson, I've watched and listened to the What's Neat podcast and show many times, I find some shows more interesting than others but I'm always amazed how hard this man works! I live in Arkansas but I was in Saint Louis about a year ago and happend to meet Ken at a local hobby shop. We talked for quite some time and I found him to be a interesting and engaging person, he even invited me to come to his home to check out the basement but unfortunately I didn't have the time. Thank you Ken and all the men and women that put themselves out there in time and effort to further our hobby!

Sorry

I won't even listen to this podcast with a title of the State of the Hobby.  I'm just completely tired of the subject matter and I'm quite certain you won't say anything I haven't heard at least 10 times before.  Over the last several years, I've just decided to tune out all the hot-button topics that really add little to the hobby and generally divide people into their tribes to throw bombs at the other tribes.  You don't have to look far on this forum to find plenty of examples.

I struggle with the idea of podcasts in model railroading because often the subjects and discussion do little to help my modeling or make me enjoy the hobby more.  Those who like it, fill your boots, but it no longer interests me.  I enjoyed listening to Lionel Strang in a Modeler's Life but I often was bored listening to a lot of the conversations. There were some good conversations and it was nice to hear from people in the hobby directly, but overall, I was bored more than not and I didn't get enough useful information from it for the time required to listen.

I've also mostly stopped watching What's Neat This Week for similar reasons.  I do like the personalities and seeing some of the work Mike Budde (and others) do, but again, with my limited time, I need more to meet the cost/benefit analysis for me.

I wish you all the success, but I just wanted to give a perspective that I'm sure others have when it comes to model railroad podcasts overall.  If you can find something that is going to interest me and help my modeling, I would tune in, but I have yet to find a podcast (with one or two or three talking heads) that does that.  I'd rather watch Luke Towan or Kathy Millett actually build something.

Watch & don't watch

Who ever has the pod cast, if it's relevant to what I'm modeling, I'll watch!  If it's not relevant, don't watch!  Yep, there's some personalities that I don't care for, but that's not why I'm watching the program.

Great podcast!

I listened in on the first episode the night it came out and I really loved it!  Great discussion and a big thumbs up for highlighting short line railroads!

I'm always excited for a new podcast, I'll listen at work today.

As others echoed a good mic is essential. Do your research so you dont waste money. I had a Blue Snowball mic and found it to be super echoey. As a frequent guest on others podcasts it was good enough. Once I became a cohost on a podcast I got a real mic that had a USB option. The Audio Technica ATR2100-USB was amazing. A decent mic is $100.

As your podcasting skills improve you may want to use if not already audio editing software. Audacity is free and can clean up the sound and trim out what you don't want.

All the best from Portland, Maine.

Andy,

Thanks for letting me know about your podcast - I'll certainly give it a listen.

(EDITED TO ADD: Andy, you're initial post on this thread lists the title of the podcast as "Section - Section" - you might want to change it to "Second Section"!!)

When model railroad podcasts first became a thing I found I really enjoyed them - I have a long commute and it was more interesting to listen to model railroad discussions than talk radio (ugh!) or even music. After a while I got tired of hearing the same tired jokes, and the same people and started expanded my podcast listening to other, non model railroad, subjects.

Then Covid hit and my 10 hours or so a week of podcast consumption dropped to almost nothing.

I've been picking up where I left off with my favorite podcasts.  I don't get particularly worked up about any of this stuff - after all most of these are free and they're worth every penny I pay for them.

A couple of observations after years (a decade plus at this point) of listening to model railroad podcasts.

1. Doesn't matter the podcast - there seem to be a sub set of modelers who seem to appear on all of them (I think I can number myself in that crowd!)
2. Some people who listen to podcasts really absorb every line in them - or at least it seems that way.
3. Some podcasts put the emphasis on modeling techniques and discussion - I've noticed others are still telling the same tired jokes and featuring the same cast of characters.  And, as I detest "inside jokes" -   I tend to listen to those less than others. I even heard one episode where there were six - count 'em - six(!!) "hosts" and one supposed interviewee.
4. Willing to give people something of a "pass" on technical issues for the first few podcasts until they get their legs under them. Brett and Todd Wiley's podcast was almost unlistenable at first, but they quickly learned, got the right equipment etc... and all was right with the world.

All for now,

Marty,

How do you feel about _being an inside joke_ on the AML podcast? Although I notice they haven't mentioned the couch much lately.

My involvement with Lionel's podcast is to appear as a guest when he asks me to. In fact, I was one of the first people he contacted to appear on the show - sometime in the first dozen episodes or so if I recall correctly. I haven't listened to it in several years.
I wasn't aware I was considered a joke - inside or otherwise.  I've known Lionel for many years and consider him a friend. It's disappointing to learn I'm considered a joke by some.
If that's the case I'll certainly seriously consider my answer next time he asks for my help.

Thanks,

At first I thought that you weren't on Spotify and that the name of the podcast was "The State of Model Railroading". It makes a LOT more sense now, and you ARE indeed on PocketCasts, which is good. I'll check it out and see what you guys have put together!

Thanks for the comment and the feedback.  After hearing much about the "audio quality" we've upgraded our equipment and I've taking a little more time on the editing...hopefully subsequent episodes show the improvement.

As far as the other comments - I tend to agree with you.  Mike and I are not really looking to expand our cast of characters however we are looking to have guests on the show from time to time.  Overall the Second Section Podcast is really geared toward providing "value" to the listener/viewer.   Either they can learn something (for newer modelers), hear about obscure prototypes and history, and talk about topics that are relevant to the hobby or modeling.  The goal is to give some relative substance, not just be solely here for comic relief.

That being said, been a big fan of your journey in the hobby and I've always appreciated your willingness to share either on your blog or in other formats and being transparent about things.

Take care!

Hi Marty,  I wouldn't worry about it.  I don't listen to podcasts so  don't know what the attempted joke was and I doubt many other folks do either.  I do know you have inspired many of us over the years with your articles sharing your expertise and experience in the hobby....DaveB

Thanks for the feedback - Mike and I took the advice to heart and have updated our equipment!

I also appreciate the words "wrangling in" negative comments.  I truly enjoy the work that Ken and his team put together for his podcast and the videos for MRH.  From my standpoint, I didn't appreciate the negativity towards Ken.  I have met him and know many of his crew and they are all really great folks who are passionate about the hobby of model railroading!

At any rate - I appreciate you listening in and your feedback is always most welcome!

Have a good holiday!
