Usually, I like to run Santa Fe passenger trains, however, this time I will be running a mixed freight train. The train’s number (#73, Westbound) and type (Mixed Way Freight) were borrowed from Chuck Hitchcock’s previous Argentine Division since I had gotten a lot of inspiration from that particular layout in building the N-Scale ATSF Paradigm Division. I did not have any issues when rehearsing this operation but, of course when doing it for record, several things go wrong so most of the bloopers and laughs are left in the video along with using the big hand for uncoupling duties.

PART 1

Part 1 begins the Santa Fe mixed way freight train # 73's trip around the layout. This train originates (not shown in the video) at Argentine Yard (staging) and first stops at Union Station and then makes stops with freight car switching at both Morris (ATSF Stock Feed Lot) and Paradigm (Holliday, KS). Switchlists were prepared and used for this operation and are shown in the video.

PART 2

Part 2 continues the westbound trip of the Mixed Way Freight. Switching operations are performed at San Angela (Lawrence, KS) and Jamestown (Topeka, KS) along with a brief stop at Michaelson Jct. (Ottawa Jct., KS) for passengers/freight/express before departing and heading to Emporia (staging).

Video

Nice video.  Having cooked a few of these myself, I appreciate the effort that it takes to manage the filming, narration and cinematography of a video.

Freight Ops

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your comments. It was a lot of fun doing these two videos. As I mentioned, I usually do passenger operations so this was definitely a change of pace for me. Of course, though, when it was rehearsed everything went right but never on camera which is okay with me.

Fun to follow

Hi John,

Enjoyed these vid's. Something different than the passenger trains but fun to follow along!

Thank you for sharing.

I found it interesting to see what can be done with switching in N scale and loved seeing the various stages of completion of the layout. Leaving the mishaps and bloopers in lends an air of authenticity that anyone who’s operated knows well. Especially when the point gremlins strike.

Freight Ops

Hi Filip,

Thanks for your comments. Yes it was fun (and a learning experience) to run a freight train with set-outs and pickups rather than a passenger train.

Freight Ops

Thank you Chris. I had fun running this train and learned a lot about freight operations/switching. When I created the switchlists, I had to pickup each car so I could read the numbers because on N-Scale cars they are tiny. Some time in the future I will run the eastbound version of this mixed freight to see how that one goes.
