I have been working out details on my 3D printed Shay.  I am at the point that it runs.  I now have to go and reprint some parts and include some of the changes I made.  The goal is to be able to just print it and put it together without any work to get it to fit together.

Here is the video of it running, I muted the sound decoder to test how quiet the drive is.  There is a little noise in the gears but I think once I grease them and turn on the decoder sound you won't hear the gear sounds.  You can hear the throttle knob sound is louder than the locomotive.

here is the spin test of the trucks with the ball bearings installed on the wheel sets and the line shaft

Thumb's Up

Great work. I bought some of those 1mm bearings, now I can't find them. There so small they get lost easily.

very quiet!

By chance have you attempted to try to print the pinion and bevel gears instead of using brass? I'm just curious if the resin can hold up to the torque. Excellent work in deed.

Gears

I am going to try,  the will hold up to torque fine with some of the stronger resin, I would be more worried about the wear.

Gears

I wonder if Dental resin would resist wear and have more durability. I believe its porcelain like material and  may self lubricate. I need to order an Epax!
