This video, including some bloopers, shows the ATSF Train # LSX, The Southern District Livestock Fast Express as it travels from Track 6 in Staging Yard A to Ready Tracks West track 1 and then up the West Helix to the eastbound main (EB). Once on the EB main, the train travels through Michaelson Junction to Paradigm where it briefly crosses over onto the westbound main to access the ATSF stock feed lot siding at Morris where this trip ends. The train consists of 18 stock cars of which there are seven N-Scale Broadway Limited (BLI) sound equipped stock cars (3 cattle, 3 sheep, and 1 hog) led by an Intermountain set of 4 FT (A-B-B-A) engines. The engines all have Digitrax non-sound decoders installed.

In the real world - All of the animals would be disembarked at the stock feed lot and receive feed and water while the cars are all cleaned and new bedding material added. In the meantime, the four engines would be detached and go to the Union Station engine facility for servicing (not shown). After all of this was accomplished and the animals placed back into their respective stock cars, the LSX would then depart for Chicago.

NOTE: There isn’t a westbound equivalent for the LSX so the railroad would move the empty cars back west on their other freight trains.

I like the Intermountain F

I like the Intermountain F units - IMO they are even nicer visually than KATO.

Intermountain FTs

Hi Jim,

The IMRC FT units do have a bit more detail than the Micro-trains FTs (I have a pair of them too) that were out about the same time and do run better than their MTL versions. The Kato F (2/3/7) units, while lacking some of the extra detail that the FT units have, do run a lot better overall IMO.

The noisy animal train...

.. a remarkable unit with good sounds. Livestock rarely moves by rail here and animal passports regulate duration etc. They do move by road but the trailers soon acquire a film of wastes and they drip loads too. Fascinating that the cars only returned empty.

LSX

Hi John,

Imagine the noise in Noah's Ark ... Fun to watch and did I notice progress on the backdrop painting ?

Looks very nice ! Love the FT's in ATSF colors. Thanks for sharing !

The LSX Train

Thank you for your comments. Several years ago the Santa Fe Railway historical society did an extensive article on stock operations that provided the information for me to develop my version of the train. I guess that it was more cost effective to send the empties back west on several different trains rather than using one train to take them back thus there wasn't a westbound equivalent.

LSX

Hi Filip, These cars are noisy enough. I couldn't imagine what the ark was like. No progress on the backdrop as my daughter-in-law has been very busy with her new business. I have been trying to get my wife to do some painting but no luck so far. I really like the early diesels and bought a couple of Intermountain A-B-B-A sets a few years ago off ebay.

Animal Sounds

Yes they do get loud but if I turned them down (using the magnetic wand) then you might not have heard them  since I use my iPhone to shoot the videos.  I do take them off the layout when this train is not running so they don't bother me when I am running other trains. All of my station and staging tracks have power cut-offs so sound decoders are not powered when not in use as well.
