I have a NCE Powercab and a Cab 06p throttle.  I am an older guy and I prefer the knob on the Cab 06 as opposed to the thumb wheel on the Powercab.  The problem I have is that in order to get the nice slow speed and smooth control on the CAB 06p that the Powercab throttle produces in 128 speed steps I have to limit the speed of my locomotives by setting the CV5 to a low number.  This is because the Cab 06p knob has limited travel since it has stops at both ends.  So my question is, Since the CAb 06e  has unlimited knob travel can it be set to 128 speed steps and provide the fine speed control that 128 speed steps allow?  Or does it still only provide limited travel?

Thanks

Jim

E = encoder

I can only comment on the 6e as I don't have a 6p.

The 6e uses a digital encoder, rather than the analog pot in the 6p.  That is why it has no end stops.  The Powercab thumb wheel is also an encoder.  My experience is that the 6e and Powercab thumbwheel give very similar results.

As to your CV settings and the 6p, I can't really comment.

Cab06 : p VS e variant RE lower-speed-range knob rotation range

Dear Jim,

Yes, with appropriate Ballistics settings, a CAB06e ("headless" encoder version, NO "end-stops"),
can be configured for "128-step operation" and require multiple-rotations of the speed-knob in order to get from 0 --> MAX speed.
(IE the "First rotation from Zero" will address the lower 1/4 - 1/3rd of the locos MAX speed range...
...the downside is "where is the 'Zero Speed' starting position?" ????).

However there are Questions Arising RE your existing Cab06p:

1 - Have you set the Cab06p "speed step mode" to 128?
(Hint: SHIFT key x3, then hit "Horn" button,
see Cab06p Manual "Appendix A" on Page 10
https://ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/202456069/Cab06_v1.pdf )

2 - Have you set the "Ballistics" value appropriiately?
Hint:
- DISconnect the Cab06 from the curly-cable,
- Press and HOLD the SELECT key,
- Connect the curly cable,
- Release the SELECT key, the LCD should be showing "Adxx"
- press ENTER _twice_, LCD should now show "bALx"
- press a number key 0-7 in order to select the Ballistics level
(sensitivity to speed of speed-knob rotation, HIgher number = MORE sensitive)

- press ENTER to save the change
- press SHIFT/ESC to exit Throttle-Config mode

I hope this helps...

Happy Modelling,

Thanks for the replies.  I

Thanks for the replies.  I dont have any experience with the "e" cab but I would ASSume that turning the knob all continuously counterclockwise would give you speed step 0 just like the thumbwheel on the Powercab.  And that the moment you turned the knob clockwise you would start at speed step 1.

I did not know there was a way to set the "p" version to 128 speed steps as no matter what you do you still only have so much knob travel to work with.

I have read the section in the manual on the ballistic setting but cant make heads or tails of how it affects the throttle.  What does it actually do?  How would I notice or feel the difference? What does more sensitive mean? I tried adjusting it but did not really see any improvement so i put it back to default.

Don't get me wrong, setting CV 5 to a low number does give good slow speed as I am spreading the available amount of speed steps from 128 to say 20  on the knob.  But the side effect is that the top speed is very limited.  Which is ok for a switcher or a local freight but can be limiting on a highballer.  I still prefer the Cab 06 over my powercab for throttle.  I just want to make sure I am getting the most out of it.
