3%5B2%5D.jpg Señor plow test fitted

I recently built a trio of lightweight CN GP9.  One notable (at least to me) missing item was the plow between the footboards on the CN GP9 fleet.  As the models come from Athearn and Proto 2000 they lack this feature, although Athearn has apparently remedied this on later models.

I wanted to complete my models as close to the prototype as I could so I needed these plows.  I gave thought to scratchbuilding them for each model, but making reproduceable parts would be a challenge with that approach.  What about 3D printing?

I lack a printer myself, but my friend Mike M. has one.  I broached the idea to him and he was receptive to the concept, possibly because I am a bad influence.  I sent him a bunch of photos and based on those and some measurements from the model he quickly created a 3D model and got them printing on his printer.  Being conservative I asked for 30 plows for my current and future fleet... I'm quite happy with the result and my GP9 fleet is now pretty much ready.  I do need to weather the plows a bit but they look good to my eye.

CN GP9 pilot

A good example of "easy" 3d printing is modeling the CN snowplow, since it's not delicate.

This picture is from CN 4484.  I like the economical end-of-track treatment.

That opening photo is very Cool .  It looks like the Geep is going into orbit!  Nice depth of field work, and a very nice model as well.

The contrast in the black in the second post helped me understand the plow, it was hard to see it when bright white.  Guessing it is more of a debris plow than for snow.

5 hose arrangement

The shot of 4484 shows the early 5 hose arrangement quite nicely, as well as the plow.  CN converted their units over to a standardized 3 hose arrangement when their SD40 started arriving in 1967.  They modified the older units (F units and GP7/9) with electrically controlled sanders.  It was apparently quite challenging to hook up the hoses correctly when there were 3, 4 and 5 hose systems on various locomotives

Here is a shot of the locomotive on the track instead of heading into orbit... I need to do a bit of weathering to match the plow to the unit.

Is that a plow on the

Is that a plow on the prototype, or is it an end of track bumper?

plow versus bumper

The prototype shot is the plow, the end of track "bumper" is a pair of rotten ties.  Doubtful they would stop much of anything.

" It looks like the Geep is going into orbit!"

Powered by a Falcon 9, I'm sure.
