Finally got around to weathering the GP7 that my wife bought me for Christmas using the techniques from the Mike Confalone weathering videos as well as some rolling stock that needed it:

Thanks...

Thanks for the compliments.... they were done with a combination of artist oils and pan pastels.

These are the videos one is all about locomotives the other freight cars and are worth every penny:

Mike is a true artist and his videos make it super easy. When I first bought the videos I tried the techniques on some inexpensive Athearn blue box cars and a locomotive thinking if I screwed up no big loss but he makes it so easy that they survive on he layout still.

Hey Dew... I used my iPhone, accidentally discovered that you can set the photo to 16:9

weathering

I'm going to suggest that anyone doing weathering take the time to look at some prototype photos of the model's type, taken as close as possible to the year you model, on such sites as rrpicturearchives, fallenflags, and canadian frieght. This gives a sense of how much, and where, to apply our weathering.

All of Mike Confalone’s examples

All of Mike Confalone's examples start with a prototype photo. Otherwise, what you’re doing is fantasy weathering from your imagination ... and unless you’re very very good, it’s going to look just like what it is — totally made up. In the worst case it will just look like a fake mess. Using photo reference forces you to subtly and unconsciously follow the laws of nature in the weathering. The result will look a lot more believable. Mike shows how to reproduce various looks without an airbrush, just using brown and black pin wash stains he makes with turps and oils, along with PanPastels and oil paint straight from the tube in measured quantities. You can find both weathering video series on TrainMasters TV and on the MRH Store as video downloads or as DVDs. Prototype photos

Agreed about using a prototype photo to go off of... tried to do that as much as I could though some cars were difficult to find a prototype photo of. The NYC hopper for instance some cars were trashed by 1980 while others were in fairly decent shape considering they survived the NYC/PC/CR merger at that point. So back to my point while I made no effort to match an exact car but looking over several cars I was able to see patterns and trends. Also, these are the cars I did the most weathering on for the most part. A majority of my cars are more lightly weathered and subtle.
