With a bit of trepidation, I got inspired and filmed a short video tour of my layout.  It moves pretty quickly, and has more of a drone feel than typical layout videos; I wanted to do something different.

Anyway, here it is -

Ditto!

I agree - very nice layout and I enjoyed the video as well!

Did you realize that you unknowingly captured video-graphic evidence of that elusive Bigfoot? Check out time-stamp ~1:09.

Excellent!

Very nice, thanks for sharing.  Great rock work.  I hate it when rock castings look like they were just glued on the face of a plaster hill which looks so unrealistic, like a wart.  Yours look very nice as they blend in with the slopes of the terrain.

Big foot

Ah yes!  That was my production assistant!  Usually known as one of my kids, who was helping actually run the trains.  We had a lot of discussion about that shot during editing, but decided to leave it alone.

Sir! Photo backdrops and scenery are outstanding and your rockwork is indeed art. What detracted was the jackrabbit operation of the trains. Only one scene weaving through the turns was almost realistically slow! if your locos won't run slow enough, maybe try pulse power for smoother slow starts and realistic yard speeds. Beautiful layout! John Colley, Sonoma, CA

Trains do run slow

During op sessions, we absolutely run things slowly, and all my motive power can crawl when need be.  But for the video, I either ran things a bit faster or sped up the video during editing.  My goal was a quick overview, and while I (or you!) might enjoy a longer video with slower trains, I wasn't sure everyone watching would feel that way.

So, since I wanted to cover a rather large range of scenery and locations, I kept things moving briskly.

Perhaps I'll do some video of switching in just one town, or on the switchbacks, during an op session and put that up.  Um... whenever we can safely have those again!  Hopefully soon.

Time

With kids, work, family, church - the layout progress has been slow.  Construction started in 2004.  Op sessions started in 2014.

The video?  Shooting was fast, after reviewing some YouTube tutorials on filming techniques - I think only an hour or so for the basic footage.  Then (again slowly due to other committments) maybe 8 hrs of editing.  I was teaching myself iMovie in the process, and this is the first video I've created.
