The earliest blue box SD40-2 frames were designed so you couldn't put the front truck in the rear and vice versa.  I don't think the new trucks fit those without some grinding.  Not sure about later frames.

The new truck has a pivot pin so you need to drill a #50 hole in each bolster to make the new style truck fit. Joseph was even nice enough to include a picture of the modification.

Thought there were probably others out there that may need to use the new trucks on the older Athearn units.
