Michael Maurer woodhogOn30

It's been awhile... a long while since I've posted anything here in my MRH blog.  Since the last post, I've moved 4 times, changed jobs 6 times, torn down two layouts, and switched modeling interests and scales as well.  Presently, I am building an On30 logging railroad [to be named later] that will be an L shaped, out-and-back with a sector plate on one end and a turntable at the other.  I will post some pictures now and hopefully, I will be back sooner than later with updates and photos on the progress.

That's it!!!

I've been thinking and thinking trying to come up with a name for my own railroad.

I'm going to call it the TB&L railroad. Pronounced T B N L, To Be Named Later.

Looks like a good start on your railroad to me, you're ahead of me, I'm still doing room prep.

You can call me EW. Here's my blog index

@eastwind - That's it!!!

LOL!  Yah, I will probably go with something else, but that's a creative name nonetheless.  Good luck with your room prep!  Fortunately, I didn't have to do any of that.

Logging & TBNL

Michael, big logging fan here. I am guessing that in your 2nd pic that is a future log dump in the bottom right corner? Anyway I hope you continue to post some more photos and updates.

TBNL, love that name. I have some industries that might borrow it too.

Welcome back Oldie from a Newbie

You will have plenty of company here now days at least because everywhere I look I see posts and photos of logging layouts.

@Jackh - Log Dump

Jack --

You are correct.  Log dump/pond will be there as you suspected.  Thanks for reading and commenting.

Sector Plate

Going backwards in time a little bit, but thought I would post a couple of photos of the sector plate that is at the head end of the railroad.  I have roadbed on the sector plate "cartridge" now, but will add a photo or two of that later when I get some taken.

That sector plate looks very

That sector plate looks very British.  In the past, it's mainly been British layouts or display layouts that included such exotic things like sector plates, and related devices to deal with the extreme limits in train spaces.

That’s a nice looking layout.

I like how you framed it. The sector plate looks great too. Is the is a sectional layout?

@gregamer - Thanks!

Thanks for the compliment.  Yes, the layout is sectional.  I have four 6 foot sections to make up the long leg of the L and the short leg is 6 1/2 feet.  The "football" shaped corner is about 4 feet long along the front and back edges...I forget what the depth is right now...anyway, you get the idea.  I used Pattern Maker's Pins to keep the sections aligned.  I may use clamps to keep them together or I may opt for carriage bolts once construction is "done" [is it really ever done?].  For now clamps are good for a quick release if I need to take them apart for some reason.

Thanks again!

Alignment Pins

Here's what I used for aligning the different sections of my layout.  See link below:

Will post some pictures of the way they look on the layout later this evening.

Alignment Pins

More on the alignment pins I used...I found them on eBay, but you can easily order direct from "cm3models".  Here's the URL: https://cm3models.co.uk/baseboard-supplies-53-c.asp   The diameter of the base of the pins is 25mm so I found a 25mm Forstner bit on Amazon and got it.  The depth of the hole to recess the pin bases is about 3mm, so I took it slow and test fit the pins as I went and mounted them flush with the surface of the ends of the layout.  Below, you can see what they look like installed.  I am please with the way they installed and how well they work to line up the sections of the layout.  I don't necessarily see myself taking the layout apart all the time, but it's nice to have a way to do that and put them back together without worrying about re-alignment.

I started building some benchwork at my old house and I used 49 inch's  for Height.  If I start one at my new house I might use 50 or 51?

Waiting on Materials

Track laying has been delayed due to waiting on supplies.  Found some track and turnouts on eBay and paid a premium price, but I guess I "need" it, so I went for it.  Will update more once track laying crew gets back on the job!

That is one fine looking build you have going! I just watched the "maiden voyage" video and was immediately drawn in to the joy of model railroading.
