Have you ever tried scratch building or kit bashing or a combination of both? If you read through my blog you will see I have done both. Kits are great and I have many on my layout built to the manufacture’s design. Kits don’t always fit the space. Kit bashing allows more freedom to fit a building to your space, time period or need. With scratch building you can design what ever you want or build a structure that you can’t find in kit form.

I happen to have copies of 1929 plans for a basic “portable” 18’ x 9’ building. This is a simple structure that could be converted to a tool house, express building, shelter and even a station. All one needed to do was change the window a door configuration, add heat, interior finishes to suit its needs.

For me I took the basic plans and using Mt. Albert scale wood http://www.handlaidtrack.com and made a very much falling apart building with a basic tool shed design.

This project was about being able to show visitors what a 2x4 stick framed building looks like in HO. Most often we see the outside of a building not the inside. I might build another “under construction” to show trim and layers of building materials before the building is completed.
What you see here is $10 USD of material so it is not inexpensive but it ads life to the layout.

Well Done!

This is very inspiring. What do you use to make all your angle cuts on the lumber?

Angled cuts

Although I have a Northwest Short Line chopper most angled cuts are freehand.

nice building

You did a great job on that Tim.  You should do a few better kept sheds for your MOW crews as well.  CN painted them either mineral brown in the early days or cream with black trim and blue doors in the more modern time.  I shot this one in Wabowden in August 2018, fairly close match to your building.
