I like the tip of putting some fabric in the pan to hold the water for your decals.

Genius!

Misting on the micro sol is genius! The dampening tray is a good idea too.

Thanks,

Clarence

More Tips

Whatever you use as a "wick" in your pan to moisten the backing on your decals, make sure it's lint free. Any loose particles, lint or fabric material can make it's way to the decal. If you're lucky, you'll see it (and remove it) before the decal dries; otherwise, you'll have a stray strand adhered to your model.

For those who are "cost effective", Pledge Floor Finish (aka Future) works well to set decals instead of Micro Sol/Micro Set.

Veeerrrrrry Interesting!

Seriously, showing that black foam reminded me that I have a stack of 2"x3" rectangles of that stuff stashed away awaiting a purpose. I think the purpose has been found.

I might also be able to use that foam to create the "high center" container you use to wet your decals.

For a misting bottle... I see a couple of glass cleaner bottles sitting here, which means I have at least one I don't need for my glasses.

Sweet. (I've already got a selection of tweezers)

I've never found the need for a wick , I just toss the decal into a bowl of water for a minute or so ( depending on the properties of the specific decal) then use my tweezers to pull it out and set it on a small plate till it slides free( test after a minute or so then retest till it slides. Once it slides a bit off the paper I use the tweezers to place it on the car. Usually I slide the decal off onto a thin layer of wet future then blot it smooth and brush a very thin layer of future over the top then let it dry....DaveB

Nice idea

Very useful tip. Thank you.   My wife has those trays in the freezer.  I think I will eat one and then put the tray to use.

Some good tips here! I like

Some good tips here! I like the sponge idea.

I still use Micro-Sol, but I can't remember the last time I bought Micro-Set. I just refill the bottle with distilled white vinegar when it gets low. Smells the same and sure seems to work the same.

Speaking of Micro-Set/vinegar, that's what I use to wet decals. I don't use water anymore and I don't dunk the decals either. I lay the decal where I want it and just place brushfulls of vinegar on the decal in place on the model. I slide the paper out from under the decal after half a minute or so and I have plenty of vinegar in place to work the decal around. Once I have it where I want it I use the same chisel brush that I used to place vinegar on the model to wick away the excess vinegar. As it starts to dry I use Micro-Sol to get the decal to lay down, which is effective probably 4 times in 5. If the decal still won't settle then I pull out the big guns, Solvaset. The key is to not let the decal dry out before going from vinegar to Micro-Sol or from Micro-Sol to Solvaset.

Great video

Great video. Have created holders out of scrap 2x4 wood. I like the idea of the denim material on the bottom of the tray. I assume you only add enough water that can be absorbed by the cloth. Great use of old spray bottles.

Decal Tips

Great ideas! I use a wet palette for painting figures. Never thought to use one for decals. I also use a piece of packing foam with a hole to hold my bottle of MEK.

Working on my 2nd layout, The FGLK Watkins Glen Line. Started modeling about 5 years ago at the age of 60.
