I built this loco after Cotton Belt 7771...a wreck rebuild that was converted to a cabless unit. Built from a  modified Railpower shell ...it is an unpowered loco but has a NCE light it decoder installed for headlights.

That turned out really nice.

These cabless units have always been one of my favorites.

I had a c30-7 railpower shell

I had a c30-7 railpower shell laying around...i cut and moved the sub base back and cut the short hood off. The doors were proper for a b36-7....i removed a few vents to get the proper b36-7 look. Built a short hood with the old nose and styrene and much sanding and filling. I had to make hand rails..i used ppw aline fb 2 ge side frames and a athearn ge b frame.  Added details and a paint job..microscale decals . The unit is unpowered but light equipped.  I used a NCE light decoder and a home made keep alive to prevent flicker.  Used pan pastels for weathering.  I do need to add a couple things to it when i get the parts .like the brake chain.   But overall i was surprised that i was able to get the front hood profile correct.  It was a seat of the pants effort since all i had was pics and imagination

Ah, diesel kitbashing....

From when men were men and sheep were nervous.

I loved playing with RPP shells.  We joked that RPP stood for Rough Plastic Parts.  I have built at least one model from each shell he offered, although I have since sold many of them.  A C30-7 detailed for BN is patiently awaiting decals.  No, it doesn't look as good as my two detailed Atlas BN C30s but it isn't bad.

What did you use for the screens on top of the radiator wings?  That was one of the worst things on the RPP C30 and B23.

Cabless loco

I used plano  #202 apex slotted grating...for the radiator grilles

Plano grating

Makes sense.  Plano #202 wasn't created yet when I built my C30s and B23s.  I used Scale Scenics expanded brass mesh.  Looks like chicken wire.   Not correct for GE screens but better than the molded nubs on the original shells.

Jeff, Your looks great Mine

Jeff,

Your looks great

Mine was built back in the late 90's, here are two links that shows the unit I built.

The unit now resides in a display case mounted to the wall of my layout room.

Outstanding...

I don't know why but for me "B" units have this mesmerizing draw.

You did an absolutely great job Jeff, thanks for sharing...

First of all, great job

First of all, great job getting to the finish line. There are so many unbuilt and half-started RPP shells out there and you made a nicely finished model.

That was clever to use the C30-7 shell. It would have been easy to use the Smokey Valley utility cab and nose, but it wouldn't have matched the prototype's roof contour and door layout which you did.

I've built a few Bxx-7 models from the RPP shells and always had trouble with the mismatch in the roofline caused by the mold parts not registering correctly. I don't know if this occurred over time or if the shells got worse as they were produced. I have considered replacing the radiator section of one of mine with parts from an Atlas U33C or C30-7 for this reason, though it would also have the dual purpose of getting rid of the nubs in the radiator screen Scott mentioned.
