Tim Latham

Did anyone know that Harold Minkwitz passed away? I heard this a month ago but could not confirm it and it showed up to day on the Early Rail Groups.io list.

Seems his wife is asking if anyone would like to have any of his collection.

He will be missed.

Harold...

Yes, heard the "official" news a few days ago.

Harold was indeed one of the "good guys" within the train hobby. I've known Harold for many years (nearly two decades), and have conversed with him via online and email countless times. He was a staunch advocate of TOC19 modeling, extolling its virtues and looking for different approaches to modeling same. He was also an enthusiastic V scaler as well, and was always complimentary toward my work in V scale.

Harold was always a very helpful and sharing individual. Definitely thought "outside the box" and was quite innovative. He shared his findings, techniques, and accomplishments online and also had several articles published in Railroad Model Craftsman and the like.

He will definitely be missed by this online friend of his, as well as many within the train hobby communities he frequented.

Godspeed Harold.

Vale - Harold Minkwitz (hminky)

Hi Tim, Andre, all

I found out in May and reported it at  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/narrow-gauge-modelling-using-ooho-track-16-5-mm-gauge-12211049

Given that Harold has probably done more to promote narrow-gauge modelling using readily available HO track and mechanisms, it seemed appropriate at the time. His concept of finding a suitable mechanism and then varying the scale to get his desired prototype on correct gauge was innovative and gave a cheap way to model the narrow-gauge equipment that wasn't readily available.

There are plans out of the UK to maintain the information in the 1/55 scale part of his website. I am unsure of the future of the rest of the Pacific Coast Air Line website

It might be time to celebrate Harold by visiting his website. Every time I've gone there I've learned something new, from modelling with faux-fur grass, water, gravel roads, etc

As Harold used to sign off -

"Thank you if you visit"

Regards,

John Garaty

....

Harold was a true pioneer and not at all afraid to dive in on gauge and scale combinations that made purists' skin crawl...I'll miss his work in his absence.

Full of ideas

He was always full of ideas.  I enjoyed his postings and magazine articles.

I appreciate how he could

I appreciate how he could look at an off the shelf standard gauge loco or car an envision it in narrow gauge for another scale. Then come up with a photo to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle.
