CABOOSE BECOMES AN EMPLOYEE-OWNED PUBLIC BENEFIT CORPORATION, and CHRIS PALOMAREZ JOINS CABOOSE AS GENERAL MANAGER.

LAKEWOOD, COLORADO JULY 2, 2020 – Now, more than ever, we as a society are called to true community, one that works for all of its participants. We at Caboose therefore stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of color, firm in the conviction that Black Lives Matter, in calling for an end, once and for all, of systemic racism on the part of our public institutions and individual citizens.

Cultivating community has always been central to our purpose at Caboose, where we have been sharing our passion for trains since 1938. We are therefore proud to announce, effective June 1, 2020 that Caboose is now a 100% employee-owned public benefit corporation. Public benefit corporations are chartered around a larger, overarching purpose to balance stakeholder interests and make a difference in the world. The public benefit purposes, as stated in our corporate charter are “to serve the worldwide community of train enthusiasts in the enjoyment of our shared passion for trains; to empower our employees through majority employee ownership; and to do so in a manner that creates a material positive impact on society and the environment, taken as a whole.”

To that end, we are pleased to announce that Chris Palomarez, former brand manager at Athearn Trains, has joined the Caboose team as its general manager, also effective June 1, 2020.

“Ever since we purchased the iconic train store Caboose Hobbies in 2016, it has been our purpose to be a beneficial presence in our local and worldwide communities, and to make a profound positive difference through employee ownership,” said Caboose PBC President and CEO Kevin Ruble. “Immediately after we closed our store location in mid-March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we set the intention of re-launching even greater than before, with fresh inventory, a new enterprise resource program (“ERP”), and new e-commerce presence to provide our valued customers the world-class experience they so clearly deserve. We are pleased to have Chris join our team at this momentous point in Caboose’s rich 82-year history, and look forward to his playing a critical role in this re-launch and future success.”

Note: Caboose is hiring.

Well, I won't be buying from any virtue signaling business. You tout your politics, whatever flavor, I shop elsewhere. I'm sick of politics infusing everything.

Dear Jeff,

Do Caboose need "follow the sun" support/customer-service coverage? If yes, I'm available for immediate start...

So what's the big change at

So what's the big change at Athearn, other than Chris not working there? Who's going to fill his shoes?

Change at Athearn

Well, as far as I know, Chris has not been replaced. So that is a pretty big change for Athearn. It's actually pretty significant that a month after Chris left, there has been no announcement about this from Athearn.

Politics is a poor choice for a business

Showing one's politics is generally a poor choice for a business.  It drives off more than it attracts.  That's what I will go hungry before eating at chik-fil-a, or go without rather than buying from Hobby Lobby...but Dick's is off the beaten path for me, so I am not inclined to go there unless other similar places end up with politics I can't stand.

This kind of posturing makes

This kind of posturing makes me want to vomit (that's not a statement of agreement or disagreement with their politics; it's a statement of extreme distaste for the "jumping on the bandwagon" approach to luring customers).

I was considering visiting the store next month. I guess I'll save the trip to the Denver area.

OREGON LOGGING SUPPLY

Phase One

I agree  with the posters who cry "Give me a break".

Caboose Hobbies, like any other hobby shop, is a business NOT a social services agency.  I refuse to do business with any entity who intends to lecture me about the latest trends in morality when I want to buy from them.

All my life I've been told that racism doesn't belong in American culture. Now we're sickeningly awash in it to the point where an institution that ought to be doing it's best to service it's customers would rather join the brainless throng of lemmings headed for the cliff.

There's not a thing wrong

There's not a thing wrong with employee ownership, in fact back in the 1970's Ronald Reagan suggested that it was the future for many good companies. That's not it, David B and you probably know it.

I repeat - I WILL NOT buy from a company that pushes trendy race division. Maybe Caboose hobbies is afraid of the marxist revolution, maybe they think this is a clever "out of the box more"  to save their bacon. Quite frankly i'd be more impressed with a statement like this-

"Caboose Hobbies wishes to state that, in these controversial times, we stand with all our fellow model railroaders without regards to their cultural differences. The love of trains spans all across racial, cultural and sexual divides.

The enjoyment this hobby provides reminds us that we have much more in common. Despite it's faults this is a great country that has made nearly all of us flush enough to engage in in a hobby like model railroading"

Grow a pair, Caboose Hobbies.

  "Caboose Hobbies wishes to

Quote:

"Caboose Hobbies wishes to state that, in these controversial times, we stand with all our fellow model railroaders without regards to their cultural differences. The love of trains spans all across racial, cultural and sexual divides."

That is what they are saying, just worded a bit differently.

"Now, more than ever, we as a society are called to true community, one that works for all of its participants. We at Caboose therefore stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of color, firm in the conviction that Black Lives Matter, in calling for an end, once and for all, of systemic racism on the part of our public institutions and individual citizens."

I got no problem with either wording of their stance. It shows they are trying to do the right thing so might do right by their customers too. .....DaveB

For the record ...

For the record, these words express the view of Caboose and MRH simply has posted them as written. Personally, we prefer to stick to having fun with trains on here and let the debate on other topics take place outside this forum. For that reason, I'm locking this thread. It's news, and that's that. Moving back to model trains, please.
