r%281%29.gif Here is the second entry in my Steam Locomotive presentation series (I need to think up some official series name).  This week will feature the good ol' 4-4-0's that started it all, as well as the precursor to last week's Pacific, the 4-4-2 Atlantic.  Also included are 2-4-2's, 2-4-4's, 4-4-4's, etc.  Think four drivers, pilot, and trailing truck.

I have two examples of my own to present.

102651-3.png

This first example is a Hornby 00-scale model of the Great Western Railway's County of Devon, a County Class 4-4-0 which was used in passenger service.  It's not the most detailed model, and it may be a little noisy, but I like it, and have recently taken to running it on a temporary, continuous loop floor layout.  At the bottom is a GIF of this locomotive pulling some passenger cars on the aforementioned floor layout.

120829-1.png

My second example is a Bachmann Spectrum On30 model of a Baldwin 2-4-4T Forney.  This is a very detailed model.  I got it out just to photograph it for this blog, and thought of making a GIF, but there was some foam underneath the pilot and I was afraid to take it out since it seemed to be firmly fastened and I was going to put it back anyways.

Remember, it doesn't matter how detailed, rare, or customized (or lack thereof) it is, or what scale, gauge, or nationality it is... if it's the correct wheel arrangement(s), it works!  And you aren't limited to just one, either.  Have fun!

Lancaster Central RR

I have one on my roster.

0AC0AFB.jpeg Number 8 does most of the yard work on the Lancaster Central.  She is a Bachmann modernized 4-4-0.

The local prototype 3’ gauge railroad (Peach Bottom RR Eastern Division) had a 2-4-0 as its first motive power. It was mentioned in a Philadelphia newspaper as looking comical and the supporters of the railroad were offended. Standard gauge railroads had moved on to more powerful locomotives for mainline power.

The other half of the Peach Bottom RR started with a 6-6 Forney. Apparently that was a rare bird and it didn’t track well on the sharp curves, after a year or two the railroad scraped up the funds to replace it.

Canada Atlantic 4-4-0s

#10 was built around 1850-1860. She was scrapped soon after acquisition by the Grand Trunk in 1905.

Baldwin built #622 in 1893. She lasted into the CN era, and was scrapped in 1925. Hopefully I'll finish the model soon.

Both models are scratchbuilt in Proto:87.  I'm describing the build of 622 on my wordpress blog, and occasionally here on MRH.

Cheers,
Rene

I have a challenge for you guys.

These are all great photos you've been showing!  However, I noticed that things have begun to slow down over the past few days, so I decided to post a challenge to try and stimulate the thread.  We have seen many fine North American locomotives... what about European locomotives?  If you have a European (continental or British) locomotive.... or a locomotive of any nationality, really.... that fits the described category, I encourage you to show it here.  Oh, and that counts Australia.  Isn't Australia European?

I really like your "Wild West" layout. I like the old trains and that is a killer stage.

MDC-Roundhouse Atlantic

Kit-built MDC-Roundhouse 4-4-2. What can I say? - very noisy and limps along the track with the gait of a drunken mule! Lettered for my previous layout (Tasman Coastal) before I switched to modelling the Santa Fe.

Southern Railways Schools Class

Hi all,

Here's something different in the way of 4-4-0's from somewhere else.

In the UK 4-4-0's were used as express passenger locomotives into the 1960's on revenue service. Some are still in service on heritage passenger services today, well into the 20-somethings. The Southern Railways "Schools" class was probably one of the last 4-4-0 designs built in quantity (40 of them).

Here's "Repton" as seen running on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 2018. Firstly, running around its train at Hull station.

1170150a.jpg

"Repton", like the "Flying Scotsman", has also travelled off-shore to the US and returned to the UK.

 1170148a.jpg

"Repton" has been previously been released in OO (1/76) scale by Hornby.

Regards,

John Garaty

The poor School class hasn't

The poor School class hasn't fared very well during corona... unlike the GWR Hall class.

...

Do you get my school/coronavirus/steam locomotive joke?  Or is it that obscure?
