With unexpected time for working on the railroad I was able to complete the base painting of the backdrops on the upper level. This work and concurrent adventures with fascia will allow for a more concentrated terrain building effort in the coming weeks. Hope everyone is safe and healthy!

I really like your time lapse video.

Really impressive,  I hope you make a follow up one in the coming weeks.  I would like to know the colors you are using during the time-lapse.

Take it easy

Colors

Miguel,

Certainly the plan is for a few more videos to come. It is easy enough to hit record and go to work on a project.

For the colors I am using Behr Sample Paints. The foreground tree color is called "Alpine Trail" and the other escapes my memory, but is a green-gray-blue mixture. No exactly perfect color matches but really do a good job of establishing a spring/rainy mood.

Maybe I can help here

John was nice enough to share the colors with me a while ago on another thread of his.  I thought he idea of the samples was brilliant and bought some.  Took a picture of mine so you can have the numbers too.

John - thanks for sharing the update.  I always like following along

Quality of sample paints may be questionable

I had similar samples from a Sherwin Williams store, and they advised the material in the small jars is not "paint" like what you'll get in the official quart or gallon sizes.  It's just a carrier developed to convey the color for you.  Not intended for logevity.

I found this out AFTER I painted an old piece of furniture with some leftovers..... of course.  But I will say the piece still looks fine 5 years later.

So, just a caution about the Sherwin Williams version.  Don't know if this applies to Home Depot samples.

Just my 1.1 cents.  (That's 2 cents, after taxes.)

Longevity

Kevin,

You bring up a great point on the samples. I truly don't have a great gauge on the longevity of the paint. Time will tell! Could be a disaster of a paint job in a few years. I have had my lower level backdrops painted for ~12-18 months and they are holding up well so far. I was attracted to the samples due to the fact they are the perfect amount of paint for my project and if the color was off drastically I hadn't invested in too large a quantity.

Steve,

Thanks for the help! I was going to say "Glacier Stream" but knew it wasn't correct.

SKY?

I like what you are doing here but have one question. The sky in the video looks like it hasn't been painted. It may be just the video itself. If not, what are you going to do for the sky?

Sky

Greg,

It is very hard to tell in photos but the sky color is actually a very light gray/blue color that looks like a brighter overcast day in person, but of course does not show on camera. My overall goal with the backdrops is to just portray mood without distracting from the main subject: trains and modeled scenery.

Left in the dark

Is it me and my computer but I get a black screen for the last 5 to 7 minutes of the video?

I loved what I did see

black

The last minutes are indeed all black.

Black!

I don't mind the black, but there is no music either!!!

Nice technique demo, anyway!!

Black Screen

Yes, the black screen exists and is the product of learning how to edit videos in new software. Hopefully I can avoid the confusion and poor ending that occured in this most recent attempt

Nevertheless, glad the time lapse was well received. Certainly nice to complete most if not all of the backdrop paintings on the railroad.

Love to hate people like you. . .

The subject line is far from true.  I envy someone with your talent would be a truer statement.

I have been in model railroading for all of my remembered life and although I can wire a layout with the best of them, build bench work like crazy, lay trouble free track 99% of the time, make almost any locomotive run like a dream and other mechanical/electrical things, I couldn't do realistic scenery if my life depended on it.  Trust me when I say I tried to.  I guess that is why my layouts all have been based on the plywood plains.

Watching you paint the backdrop was fantastic to see and frustrating for me.  You make it look easy.

Keep up the great work.  I hope that some day I may have a layout that isn't the plywood plains.
