I've been spending my new-found time making more pine trees.  For the ones I showed on my previous entry, I used coconut fiber liner.  For these trees, I switched to using cheap furnace filter material.  I found the filter material to be much easier to shape and trim. Plus it is less dense and easier to pull the layers apart.  This results in a more "airy" tree, which I think looks more realistic.  Here are my results.

The tree on the right is completed.  I still need to add the turf "needles" to the left one.

More picts

Here are a couple more finished ones.  You can see the more-dense ones I made previously in the background.

Here's a shot of the completed scene that I mocked up.  The coconut-fiber ones are in the center, behind the building.

You can also see my attempt at a dead tree to the left of the building.  It really looks better in person - it's kinda out of focus in this shot.  I think dead trees and deadfall are all too often omitted from model forests.

Most of these are between 35-45 scale feet tall.  While observing the full size trees, this doesn't seem overly tall.  Another thing I notice about most models is that the trees are often way too short.  I made one in the background that is 60ish feet tall.

Nicely done.....

I make my own pines also.....most are 40 to 50 feet high. Some 25 ~ 30, a handful 60 to 70.....dead trees are on my to do list

Looks good

I think the two types together are effective as in nature you find some trees more and less dense.
