We used MDF in the Sign Company

MDF is a fine material provided that you read the hazard sheet on it. When you cut it use a ventilator due to toxic off gasses when cutting it. And if you seal the ends, it will be moisture RESISTANT, like masonite, water will make the material expand and deteriorate.

I scabbed some 1/16th inch

out of a dining table we bought off wayfair.  It was used for package stiffening material.
