Do you have a wrecking crane on your railroad? If so, please post a photo and info about how you modeled or weathered it.

250 ton crane model in HO

Here'a photo I made on the Blissfield (Mich.) Model Railroad Club. This commercial model represents a steam-powered crane of 200 or 250 ton capacity.

The C&O had a similar crane, WC-24, built in 1930, later renumbered to #940011.-a-750px.jpg

Two...

I now have two. One stationed to the north of the Ozark Sub, one to the south. They're AHM cranes. Really cool looking little cranes. I think the safety/hazzard stripes on the ends are a nice touch. All I've done is installed metal wheels and coupler boxes/couplers. Still factory lettered. I'll re-letter them "eventually"!

steam vs. diesel power

Andre's AHM cranes represent those built with diesel power, mostly after the mid-1950s. Selector's photo above (maybe Athearn?) shows the older, steam-powered technology.

Here's mine, from my "to-do" shelf. Bill Gould created this back in the early 1980s. 53-750px.jpg Sure would like to see if anyone has built (or started) one of these. FWIW, most northern railroads enclosed the cab.

The tool car...

To me, the tool car is the real star.

Here is a photo of the Gould Brownhoist 120 t crane.

And here the boom car:

Currently both are provided by Tichy. Though the crane has a lot of parts it is a quite easy built as the parts fir very well.

I built both many years ago when the kits were newly released. At that time my knowledge about correct paint schemes and lettering was limited.

@Bremner N scale cranes

@bremner, is that the Mini-Trains kit? Regardless, would you share a close-up photo?

Wreck trains usually had lots of interesting equipment. Tool cars, flats with extra trucks, kitchen cars, etc.

back in the day, Dimi-Trains N scale crane

As I've been told, Dimi-Trains sold the 120-ton wrecking crane in N scale back about 1982. (This kit is now sold by Tichy Trains.)

I'd sure like to see N scale photos of this model.

Roco Model Crane

I have quite a number of cranes stored away somewhere in my cargo trailer.I recall collection up a number of the different manufactures to arrive at some of the better versions. I thought I had happened across them a few days ago when I discovered this tray with some cabeese in it and a sign indicating it had cranes in the second layer.

Alas I did a little discovery job today and discovered there were only 2 cranes under those cabeese,...these 2

That bottom one is a Roco model. As I have mentioned before I am impressed with many of their products,...nice detailed molding

Mine are a bit more modern.

The wreck crew and cranes on my RR are by contract call when needed. Boom car has been replaced by a few tractor trailers.

MRL big hook crane set

Here is an HO scale MRL big hook crane set with accompanying wheel tender car and tender flatcar that I completed a few months ago. It's not perfect, but close enough, nonetheless.

Greg, I have seen that image

Greg,

I have seen that image before on the net and glad to see it is yours.

Where did you get the window? It looks like a CNR caboose window.

Montana Rail Link - they took over part of the BN in Montana back in the 80s...

Really surprised me when driving across Montana in 1996 to see these blue and white locomotives where I expected to see Cascade Green.

found some more

As I posted back here  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/show-us-your-wrecking-cranes-and-boom-cars-12215074  I only found 2 before.

The other day I was looking for something else and happen to see a tray advertising some more cranes.  I found 6 more.

15740-2.jpeg

Obviously the top one is a European model.

Then it turns out that regardless of the boxes, 4 of the other 5 are 'made-in-Austria',...thus Roco models.

The fifth one is unmarked, but appears to be the same maker as the silver one I posted earlier,..

Ibertren N Scale diesel-hydraulic rail crane

Hi all,

I have one of these

lurking in its storage box somewhere.

The boom could elevate and extend, the cab and boom could rotate, the crane chassis was fitted with extendable outriggers. The boom car carried 4 timber block sets for installing under the crane outriggers, the crane counterweight, a spreader-bar and a cylindrical "key" used to raise and lower the hook on the main hoist. The 4-wheel boxcar was for tools and slings (sliding doors didn't open) and the yellow crew car was a repurposed RENFE (Spanish National Railways) passenger car.

At the time this was purchased in the late-1980's/early-1990's, this Ibertren crane was one of the most detailed "modern image" rail-cranes available in N-scale. There were probably 2 others from Europe that were more detailed - but they were way more expensive and way out of my buying range.

Regards,

John Garaty
